Police Investigate Attempted Murder in Shopping Center Parking Lot

CARLSBAD, Calif. — On December 22 at 10:22 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to a report of a white male adult assaulting another male subject in the shopping center parking lot located at 1700 Aviara Parkway.

Responding officers found a 68-year-old male unconscious suffering from head injuries. Carlsbad Fire Department personnel rendered medical aid and transported the victim to a local area hospital where the male was admitted for care. Witnesses who remained on scene assisted officers in locating the suspect. The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Patrick Ferncase of Vista. Ferncase was booked at the Vista Detention Facility for attempt murder, elder abuse, and a parole hold. The victim remains in the hospital in critical condition. There is no known relationship between the two subjects and there are no outstanding suspects. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time.
