OCEANSIDE, CA (JULY 24, 2024) – Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) is proud to announce that Rupinder Kaloti has been awarded a prestigious solo exhibition for her compelling piece “Fire Raiser” in the juried exhibition More Disruption: Representational Art in Flux, on display now at the museum. The selection, made by Maria Mingalone, Executive Director of OMA, recognizes Kaloti’s exceptional work as the Director’s Choice.
Rupinder “Rupy” Kaloti is a Los Angeles-based multimedia artist known for her thought-provoking and deeply personal artwork. She primarily works with oil paint to create traditional & 3D works fusing elements from her Indian heritage and American upbringing. Her winning artwork “Fire Raiser,” or “Aag Lagni” in Punjabi, translates to catch fire, to raise fire, to burn, to become costly, to feel intense hunger, to writhe, or to be incensed. This evocative piece holds deep personal significance for Kaloti, reflecting a nickname given to her by her grandmother during her childhood. The artwork’s multifaceted interpretations resonate with the themes of disruption and transformation explored in the exhibition.
“Rupinder Kaloti’s work is a beautiful example of an artist taking creative license and really stretching what representational art can mean to us today,” remarks Maria Mingalone.
More Disruption: Representational Art in Flux, juried by esteemed artists and critics John Seed, Aleah Chapin, and Timothy Robert Smith, delves into the dynamic shifts in representational art influenced by abstraction, web-based imagery, and socio-political concerns. Inspired by Seed’s book of the same name and his earlier work Disrupted Realism: Paintings for a Distracted World, the exhibition invites viewers to engage with over 50 artworks that challenge traditional boundaries.
As representational art continues to evolve, More Disruption offers a narrative on how contemporary issues shape artistic expression. The exhibition presents a diverse range of mediums and styles, highlighting how today’s artists navigate the complexities of modern life through their unique hybrid styles.
As a result of winning this prestigious award, Kaloti will host a solo exhibition at OMA in 2026. Visitors can view “Fire Raiser” and the entire More Disruption exhibition at the Oceanside Museum of Art now through September 15, 2024.
