The City of San Marcos is implementing a pilot program to improve water quality at Discovery Lake as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the preservation of San Marcos’ natural resources.

Two solar-powered ozone injection aeration units will be installed at Discovery Lake this month. The aeration units are designed to increase water circulation and inhibit algae growth. The technology was chosen based on the results of a feasibility study that the City conducted last year.

“Our goal for the program is to protect the environment and keep Discovery Lake clean and beautiful for San Marcos residents and visitors to enjoy,” said City of San Marcos Stormwater Program Manager Reed Thornberry.

Visitors to Discovery Lake may notice the installation of small aeration devices, hoses, buoys and informational signs.

The program will be tested for several months to ensure its effectiveness. The City will then evaluate options to potentially expand the program.

The initiative is part of the City’s Stormwater Management Program, which protects the City’s surface waters and maintains their beneficial uses. For more information, visit www.san-marcos.net/stormwater.
