SAN MARCOS, CA, (January 1, 2023) – San Marcos’ Old Cal Coffee is now Ascend Coffee Roasters. Since opening in 1990, Old Cal Coffee has been known in San Marcos as a coffee shop where locals go to enjoy delicious coffee, food and a welcoming environment. The re-brand to Ascend Coffee Roasters serves as an opportunity to stay true to its community roots while revamping the look and feel of the space as well as the food and coffee menu for a more modern and fresh experience.
Located at 1080 W San Marcos Boulevard, Ascend Coffee Roasters will open under its new name on January 1, 2023, with an official Grand Opening/Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Coffee Education Class slated for January 20th at 10 am. The updated space, which boasts plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, will continue to serve as a local hangout where the community can come together around the shared goal of enjoying delicious coffee and food in a comfortable environment. Additionally, a variety of events highlighting local talents, such as poetry reading and musical performances, are slated to begin in the coming weeks.
Owner Erin Harper began working at Old Cal Coffee as a barista in 2011 and has since worked her way through management and ultimately partial ownership in more recent years. In addition to rebranding the shop, as of January 1, 2023, Harper will be the sole owner of the business. Harper began roasting coffee beans under the Ascend Coffee Roasters name in 2021, the same year the coffee shop began exclusively serving coffee beverages made with beans from Ascend. A shift to Ascend Coffee Roasters made sense as Harper embarks on a journey of sole-proprietorship.
“My love of coffee and community began at Old Cal Coffee more than ten years ago and I am so excited to bring San Marcos an updated experience with the same friendly people and coffee the community has come to expect and enjoy,” said Erin Harper, Owner, Ascend Coffee Roasters. “Despite the name change and re-branding, the staff and experience our customers know and love will remain the same. I am extremely excited to bring an updated remodel, menu and overall feel to a place and a community I love so much!”
