SACRAMENTO – Senate Republican Leader Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) released the following statement in response to Governor Newsom’s State of the State remarks:

“Californians by their nature are optimistic and I appreciate the Governor’s upbeat tone about addressing the state’s many challenges. I welcome his efforts to prevent devastating wildfires, invest in our schools, and hold high-speed rail contractors and consultants accountable for their performance. These are steps in the right direction.

“While the state of the state is fantastic for the elites who can easily afford to pay California’s high cost of living, it’s anything but for millions of Californians who are struggling to make ends meet.

“With the non-partisan Legislative Analyst’s Office warning of a future economic downturn, the new spending commitments of today can easily become the painful budget cuts of tomorrow. For example, paving the way for a government-run takeover of health care would lead the state to financial catastrophe, deny Californians the right to make their own health care choices, and rip private health insurance away from those who want it. The state should refocus its efforts on improving existing health programs instead.

“With state agencies like the DMV continuing to fail thousands of customers, Californians deserve better from Sacramento. Senate Republicans are ready to work with the Governor to make California truly affordable for all.”
