On August 16, 2020, at about 9:22 AM, Deputies from the San Marcos Patrol Station responded to a report of a single vehicle rollover collision at San Elijo Road and Schoolhouse Way, in the city of San Marcos.
When Deputies and San Marcos Fire Department personnel arrived, a 2017 Toyota Prius was found at the bottom of the hillside at the location. The 2 occupants of the Prius were trapped inside the vehicle as it came to rest of its passenger side. San Marcos Fire Department personnel extricated the 84-year-old male driver and the 77-year-old female passenger from the vehicle, and they both were transported to Palomar Medical Center where they were treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the 84-year-old male driver was southbound on Schoolhouse Way preparing to make a right turn onto San Elijo Road. The driver was driving at a speed where he was unable to make the right turn.
The driver continued through the intersection, as he was attempting to turn right, causing him to briefly drive westbound in the eastbound lane of San Elijo Road. The driver struck the curb, continued over the sidewalk and continued about 150 feet down the hillside. The vehicle came to rest, on its passenger side, against a chain link fence.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing, and the San Marcos Traffic Division is handling the investigation.
