CARSLBAD-Calif. – On January 31, 2021, at 10:38 a.m. the City of Carlsbad Police Department received a 911 call from a resident in the area of 7600 block of Circulo Sequoia due to a hit and run traffic collision.
When Officers arrived, they found a female bicyclist unconscious on the ground who had injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. The bicyclist, a 65-year old female from Arizona, was transported to Palomar Medical Center with serious injuries.
A witness described seeing a black lowered Cadillac fleeing from the scene.
Carlsbad Police Officers, San Diego County Sheriff Deputies, and San Diego Police Department’s Air Support responded to the area to search for the driver of the Cadillac. A Carlsbad Police Officer located the abandoned Cadillac a short distance from the collision scene. After an extensive search of the area was conducted, the driver, and sole occupant of the Cadillac, was apprehended and arrested.
The preliminary investigation by the Carlsbad Police Department determined that 26-year old driver, identified as John Hutchinson, was traveling in the 7600 block of Circulo Sequoia when he struck the bicyclist causing serious injuries. Hutchinson fled the scene of the traffic collision. Hutchinson was arrested and transported to the Vista Detention Facility where he was booked for felony hit and run with injuries and driving under the influence with Injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
The 7600 block of Circulo Sequoia was closed for an extended period of time as officers investigated the collision, but is now open.
