During the COVID-19 pandemic, many small businesses are struggling to survive. A local small business owner, Debbie Medrano, Owner of San Diego Balloons and More, is learning to pivot from the normal business of big corporate event planning and balloon décor to contactless deliveries for at-home celebrations and drive-by birthdays. This pivot started as a request from her customers and has become a way for the business to survive. Debbie has learned over the years of providing balloons, that the opportunities to show love and support are a great business model and is never out of style.
Balloons provide instant joy and create a connection between people separated by distance.
They were normally doing about 5 home deliveries a month and now they are doing 20 a week and every week is getting busier. Local families that can’t be with their loved ones just 10 miles away are sending balloons and lovely messages in the card that expresses how much they are missed.
Debbie and husband Angel have lived in Vista for 24 years and have been very active in supporting the community. They were scout leaders (both sons, Mitchell and Blake are Eagle Scouts), coordinated the RBVHS Grad Night celebration, and co-founded Vista Teen Outreach (they deliver 200 bags of food per week to Vista families). She is also the owner of Five Star Premier Events, which has been coordinating the “Taste of Vista’ and “The Vista Rod Run”, which is another revenue stream that is being cancelled this year.
They pivoted to no contact deliveries with balloon bouquets to yard decor for those drive-by celebrations. Graduation is a busy month with celebrations at schools, universities and private parties. This year they will be providing 2020-yard décor so the graduate will have an opportunity for some fun photos with their family. Debbie is looking forward to the restrictions being lifted and celebrating Re-Grand Openings from churches welcoming back congregation, retail stores welcoming back customers, and Corporations welcoming back employees.
Her motto is “The party doesn’t start until the balloons arrive”.
