The former home of Tip Top Meats in Carlsbad has been transformed into SoCal Antiques and Appliances, bringing more than 45 independent vendors and vintage shopping back to the city.
The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce joined vendors and members of the community Saturday, Aug. 15, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening after seven months of construction.
“This building has been a part of Carlsbad for generations, and we wanted the space to honor that history while giving it a fresh new purpose,” said Melissa McClure, a representative for SoCal Antiques and Appliances.
Founded by German immigrant Joachim “Big John” Haedrich in 1967, Tip Top Meats grew over nearly six decades from a traditional butcher shop into Carlsbad’s go-to European market, butcher counter, and restaurant. When the longtime business closed its doors in 2024, the closure was felt throughout the community. Tip Top Meats has since reopened in a smaller portion of the building, making way for the new antique mall in its former space.
The opening also brings back a type of shopping that had gradually disappeared from Carlsbad as antique and vintage shops, particularly around the Village, dwindled over the years. Teri Polley, designer and owner of Teri Recycles, said visitors have been quick to notice. “People come up and thank us for being here,” Polley said. “They tell us Carlsbad really needed this and how sad they were when all of the antique malls and shops closed.” Through Teri Recycles, Polley gives old textiles a second life, transforming vintage and discarded fabrics into new clothing, including colorful handmade pieces and children’s wear.
Across the way, Rachel Jennings, owner of Crimson Collective, carries vintage men’s and women’s clothing, denim, boots and Western pieces, along with clothing selected and styled for musicians and artists. The two are among more than 45 vendors offering everything from appliances and furniture to antiques, traditional collectibles, vintage fashion, home décor and repurposed pieces, each bringing their own style to the mall. Visitors can even grab a drink at Sand Dollar Coffee, located inside the mall.
McClure said the goal was to create more than a place to shop. “Our goal was never just to open an antique mall, it was to create a place where this community can gather, discover something they love, and be part of this building’s next chapter,” McClure said.
That next chapter brings antique shopping back to Carlsbad while giving a familiar community landmark a new purpose.
SoCal Antiques and Appliances is located at 6118 Paseo del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92011, adjacent to Tip Top Meats.
