Staying safe while keeping warm
As temperatures cool down this winter, here are some key steps you can take to stay safe:
•Remember the three feet rule. If you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable at least three feet away such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs.
•Fireplaces and space heaters require supervision. Turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are completely extinguished before leaving the room or going to bed.
•Don’t catch fire! If you are using a fireplace, use a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs.
•The kitchen is for cooking. Never use a stove or oven to heat your home.
•Always turn off portable heaters and unplug electric heaters when unattended, leaving the house or before going to bed. Do not use portable heaters near curtains, furniture, Christmas decorations or other combustibles.
•Schedule a free inspection of your home heating system with SDG&E by calling, (800) 411-7343.
Most importantly, ensure your smoke detectors are in good working order. Each floor level, hallway and bedroom should have a smoke detector. Test your smoke detectors monthly and also remember when you “change your clock, change your battery.”
