Sunflowers for the Ukraine – Art display at Escondido Public Library

Seventeen members of the Escondido Art Association will be showing very special paintings at the Escondido Library from April 9 to 30, 2022. All the paintings are of sunflowers — a symbol of happiness, optimism, longevity, and peace. The sunflower is also the national flower of Ukraine.

EAA team member Cathy Haven, says, “This wall of sunflower paintings represents a collective effort by members of the Escondido Art Association to express our profound sadness at what is currently happening in Ukraine. We hope the beauty found here will inspire and encourage the viewer to reach out and support the people of Ukraine. You will find a partial list of Ukraine relief organizations next to this exhibit.”

The event coordinator, Byron Marler, says, “This fundraiser will send funds to World Central Kitchen (wck.org) which is feeding Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Romania, Moldova and Hungary. Our EAA team selected WCK after carefully reviewing the options.”

World Central Kitchen is a not-for-profit non-governmental organization devoted to providing meals in the wake of natural disasters. Founded in 2010 by celebrity chef José Andrés, the organization prepared food in Haiti following its devastating earthquake. Currently cooking out of their own Relief Kitchen in Przemysl, Poland, and mobilizing a vast network of chefs and volunteers across all six countries, WCK is providing nearly 200,000 hot, nourishing meals every day.

The paintings can be purchased by contacting the Escondido Art Association. All proceeds from the sale except for sales tax will be donated to World Central Kitchen.

The participating artists who are donating their painting proceeds to this cause are Jinx Lennon, Alison Driessen, Dan Kilgore, Kathy Aldrich, Elaine Griveas, Janice Niles, Cathy Haven, Brenda Townsend, Delores Christensen, Chickey Woldin, Suzanne Nicolaisen, Katie Cowan, Carol Criscsi, Muriel Varshay, Byron Marler, Pat Hunter, and Diana Prout.

The Escondido Library is located at 239 South Kalmia Street, Escondido. Library hours: Monday, Friday, Saturday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. closed Sunday.

The EAA is an all-volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to promote the arts in North County San Diego. New members are welcome. For more information visit escondidoartassociation.com, email eaa121grand@gmail.com, or call the Artists Gallery (442) 317-0980.
