Tax Measures Mount as Election Draws Near

NORTH COUNTY — Tax measures are piling up throughout the region as cities grapple with thinning budgets, cost increases and more.

Four cities are considering sales tax increases, while another may ask voters to approve a transient occupancy tax (hotel tax) for short-term rentals. Two cities — Escondido and San Marcos — are facing stiff budget deficits, while Encinitas and Oceanside are looking at funds for infrastructure.

The Encinitas measure is a new tax, while Oceanside’s Measure X is calling to extend its half-cent measure first enacted in 2019. The tax proposals in Escondido, Encinitas and San Marcos are for one-cent increases.
