SAN MARCOS, Calif. – This week in Cal State San Marcos Athletics, men’s and women’s basketball will wrap up their 2018 home events by hosting Cal Poly Pomona in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Wednesday.

The women’s team will play the Broncos at 3 p.m. before the men hit the court at 5 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Wednesday, Dec. 19 – 3 p.m.
CSUSM (5-3, 2-2 CCAA) vs. Cal Poly Pomona (7-1, 3-0 CCAA)

PREVIOUS WEEK •With a week off for finals, the Cougars last competed on Dec. 8 when they dropped a 53-49 decision to San Francisco State in The Sports Center.
•Junior Jon’Nae Vermillion tallied a season-best 21 points in the contest while freshman Dynnah Buckner chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.
•CSUSM ranks second in defensive rebounds behind Chico State, averaging 28.6 per game.
•Vermillion is ranked No. 5 in points per game at 14.1 while sophomore Emma Forel is No. 11 at 12.8 per game.

CAL POLY POMONA BREAKDOWN •After dropping their second game of the season to then-No. 16 Azusa Pacific (74-70), the Broncos have been on a tear with a six-game win streak with four being road victories.
•CPP defeated Central Washington 81-77 on Dec. 15 in Kellogg Arena in a nonconference matchup.
•The Broncos are the CCAA leader in field goal percentage (43.9) and 3-point field goal percentage (34.5).
•Jordyn Shane ranks No. 3 in the CCAA in point per game at 15.7 while Rebecca Islas is in the top 10 in both points and rebounds per game at 15.2 (4th) and 8.9 (5th), respectively.
•CPP was picked to finish second in the CCAA Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE JIMENEZ FILE •Head coach Renee Jimenez enters her fourth season in charge of the Cougar women’s basketball team, a program that is only in its eighth season of existence.
•In her eleven seasons coaching in the CCAA, Jimenez has compiled a 158-122 (.564) coaching record. She spent two seasons at Cal State San Bernardino after a five-year stint at Cal State Monterey Bay.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars last competed on Dec. 8 against San Francisco State and took a 76-67 loss at home.
•Bryce Sloan and Darae Elliott each posted a team-high 13 points while Khalil Fuller posted his team-leading fourth double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
•The Cougars shot 47.4 percent from the field while the Gators shot 41.8 percent.
•Fuller’s four double-doubles are tied for the CCAA lead and rank 23rd nationally.
•Fuller ranks 16th nationally for offensive rebounds per game (3.70).
•JR Williams ranks second in the CCAA and 21st nationally for total steals with 24.

2018 HOME FINALE AGAINST NO. 9 CAL POLY POMONA •The Broncos last played on Dec. 8 and knocked off Sonoma State by a score of 75-62.
•CPP is currently ranked No. 9 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Poll and No. 21 in the Division II Sports Information Directors Association (D2SIDA) Poll.
•CPP ranks second nationally for field-goal percentage defense (36.6%), fifth for blocked shots per game (5.6), seventh for rebound margin (9.8), and eighth for fewest fouls (107).
•Justin Young leads the conference and ranks 13th nationally for blocked shots per game (2.40) while Jordan Ogundiran leads the conference and ranks seventh nationally with 3.0 steals per game.
•CPP was picked to finish second in the CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll and had four first-place votes.
•The Cougars own a 3-2 series lead against the Broncos and are 1-1 in games at The Sports Center.

THE FOSTER FILE •Head coach B.J. Foster enters his third season in charge of the CSUSM Men’s Basketball program after taking over the head position in 2016.
•Under his leadership, the Cougars advanced to the CCAA Tournament for the first time in 2017-18 after finishing the season with a 15-7 conference record and a 20-9 overall record.
•Prior to becoming head coach of the Cougars, Foster was an assistant coach with the team from 2013 to 2016.
•Foster has tallied a career record of 41-26 (.612).
