SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Women’s golf, softball, baseball, women’s basketball and men’s and women’s track & field will all be in action this week for Cal State San Marcos Athletics.
Women’s golf will get the week underway by hosting the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational on Monday at Shadowridge Golf Club. Due to expected rain on Tuesday, the field will be playing all 36 holes on Monday.
Softball will host Cal State East Bay in a four-game series this weekend at CSUSM Softball Field. Friday’s doubleheader will get underway at 1 p.m., and Saturday’s twin bill will begin at 11 a.m.
Baseball will welcome Cal State Monterey Bay for a four-game series at CSUSM Baseball Field. The series will get underway on Friday at 3 p.m. and will be followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon. The series will come to a close on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Women’s basketball will head to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the NCAA Divison II West Regional on the campus of Hawai’i Pacific. No. 4-seed CSUSM will go up against No. 5-seed Azusa Pacific on Friday at 10:30 p.m. (PT). Should it be victorious, CSUSM will play the winner of No. 1-seed Hawai’i Pacific and No. 8-seed Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
Men’s and women’s track & field will continue their outdoor season on Saturday by competing at Point Loma’s Ross & Sharon Irwin Collegiate Scoring Meet. The meet is set to get underway at 9 a.m.

LAST OUTING •The Cougars defended their title at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout last week, finishing with a 21-over 597 – 12 strokes better than second place No. 14/12 Simon Fraser.
•Jaime Jacob claimed the 12th individual medalist honor of her collegiate career after putting for a birdie on the 18th hole to defeat Academy of Art’s Iveta Posiedni by one stroke with a 4-under 140.
•Jacob earned her fifth CCAA Golfer of the Week honor of the season and the 11th of her career last Wednesday.
NATIONAL RANKINGS •In the first NCAA Division II Regional Rankings released on Feb. 6, the Cougars sat on top at No. 1 in the West Region.
•CSUSM ranks No. 12 in the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) national poll and No. 14 in the GolfStat.com national poll.
CSUSM FUJIKURA INVITATIONAL •The Cougars placed third in the 2019 CSUSM Fujikura Invitational, 13 strokes behind winner and then-No. 5 Barry and only one stroke back from then-No. 1 Dallas Baptist.
•Last year’s tournament featured nine teams ranked in the GolfStats.com Top 25 including then-No. 1 Dallas Baptist, then-No. 2 Nova Southeastern and then-No. 3 University of Indianapolis.
•Jacob was CSUSM’s top finisher, tying for third with a 1-over 145.
THE HUTTON FILE •Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•The CSUSM women’s team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
•Under Hutton’s leadership, the women’s team won CSUSM’s first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019.
•In CSUSM’s first year of being a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in 2017-18, the Cougar men’s and women’s golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.

LAST WEEK •The Cougars fell 73-62 to No. 25/RV UC San Diego in the CCAA Tournament Final on Saturday at RIMAC Arena.
•CSUSM snapped its program-record 11-game win streak with the loss.
•It was the Cougars’ second appearance in the conference tournament and first in the finale as CSUSM exited last year’s tournament in the semifinals.
•Earlier in the week, CSUSM defeated Sonoma State, 65-51, in the tournament quarterfinals after dropping both regular-season contests to the Seawolves.
•In the CCAA Tournament Semifinals, the Cougars posted a come-from-behind 77-69 victory over Cal State East Bay. CSUSM outscored the Pioneers 32-17 in the fourth quarter, going 20-of-21 from the free throw line.
•Akayla Hackson has the top free throw percentage in the west region at 86.5% (90-of-104).
•The Cougars dropped to seventh in 3-point field-goal defense in the nation and is tied with Hawaii Pacific – the No. 1 seed in the west region.
•Emma Forel has the top field-goal percentage in the west and ranks sixth in the nation, shooting 60.9% (162-of-266).
AZUSA PACIFIC •This will be the fourth overall meeting between these two teams and third in the NCAA Division II era for both teams.
•All three meetings between the two Cougar squads have been at neutral sites.
•In the last meeting, CSUSM fell 84-69 to then-No. 17 APU at the UCSD Thanksgiving Classic in 2017.
•CSUSM’s lone win at 79-61 over APU came in 2016 at the same UCSD tournament. CSUSM shot 47.2% (25-of-53) from the field while going 23-of-25 (92%) at the free throw line.
•APU fell 68-57 to Hawaii Pacific in the PacWest tournament finale last Saturday.
•Against common opponents with CSUSM, APU is 5-1 with an 82-77 loss to Point Loma on Dec. 21.

THE EWING FILE •Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second season in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing last year with a 14-31 record that included a series sweep over Cal Stat East Bay on the road.
•Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.

•CSUMB has the best team batting average in the CCAA at .316 and also leads the league with 240 hits.
•The Otters’ lineup is bolstered by Brady Miguel and Kokko Figueiredo, who are ninth and tenth in the CCAA for batting average at .375 and .368, respectively.
•On the mound, CSUMB’s team ERA of 4.15 ranks eighth in the conference, and the Otters have allowed the fifth-most hits with 208.

THE GUILIANO FILE •Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his fourth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.

•Austin Jones has the eighth-best 110-meter hurdle time in program history at 15.92
•Nick Leeds had the ninth-best high jump mark in program history at 1.86 meters while teammate Justice Chima tied his personal best with a mark of 2.01 meters – a mark that currently ranks fourth in program history.

THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his second season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•In 2019, Olson’s men’s and women’s squads tallied three CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men’s team earned five All-West Region selections.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).
