SAN MARCOS, Calif. – This week in Cal State San Marcos Athletics, women’s golf will open its spring season while men’s and women’s basketball, women’s track & field, softball and baseball each continue their seasons.
Women’s golf will play against seven NCAA Division I teams in match play at San Diego State’s Lamkin Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at The Farms Club in Rancho Santa Fe.
Men’s and women’s basketball will return to The Sports Center to host Cal State LA in their Pink Out games on Thursday. The women’s game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m., and the men’s game will begin at 7:30 p.m. As part of the CSUSM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and ASI Cougar Pantry food drive, anyone who brings in a non-perishable food item on Thursday will receive complimentary admission. All donations benefit CSUSM Students. The Cougars will close out the week on Saturday by hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills. The women’s contest will get underway at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the men’s bout at 3 p.m.
Women’s track & field will return to indoor action on Friday and Saturday at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale, Michigan. Friday’s meet will get underway at 7 a.m. (PST) while Saturday’s meet will also start at 7 a.m. (PST).
Softball will head to Cal State San Bernardino for its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road trip of the year. Both doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday will begin at noon.
Baseball will open CCAA play this weekend by facing Cal State Dominguez Hills in a home-and-home series. The series will start in San Marcos with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Friday and a noon start time on Saturday. On Sunday, the series will finish up with an 11 a.m. doubleheader in Carson.

LAST OUTING •CSUSM ended the fall season with a DII West Region Preview Tournament Title on Oct. 22.
•The Cougars shot an 18-over 594 at The Club at La Costa, the course where CSUSM will host the 2020 NCAA Division II West Regional.
•Three Cougars finished in the top 10 with Jaime Jacob (143, -1) taking second, Breann Horn (146, +2) securing third and Savannah Magallon (149, +5) placing sixth.
NATIONAL RANKINGS •In the first NCAA Division II Regional Rankings released on Feb. 6, the Cougars are No. 1 in the West Region.
•CSUSM ranks No. 15 in the GolfStat.com national poll and No. 12 in the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) national poll.
SDSU LAMKIN INIVITATIOAL •The tournament will consist of three rounds of match play – two on Monday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. and the final round on Tuesday with tee times off holes 1 and 10 beginning at 7:30 a.m.
•This marks the first time CSUSM has competed in the SDSU Lamkin Invitational.
•The last time the Cougars played in a tournament featuring match play was the second part of the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship where CSUSM earned runner-up honors.
THE HUTTON FILE •Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•The CSUSM women’s team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
•Under Hutton’s leadership, the women’s team won CSUSM’s first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019.
•In CSUSM’s first year of being a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in 2017-18, the Cougar men’s and women’s golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.

LAST WEEK •The Cougars collected a 69-57 win at Chico State on Saturday.
•With Saturday’s win, CSUSM matched the program’s single-season record of 18 victories set in 2018-19 and 2011-12.
•Forel collected her ninth double-double of the season at Chico – her eighth in the last ten games.
•Forel is the conference leader and ranked No. 6 in the nation in field-goal percentage at 63.0%.
•CSUSM continues to sit in second place in the CCAA standings with conference leader UC San Diego one game ahead. Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State East Bay are two games behind in third place.
•For the eleventh consecutive week, the Cougars are the NCAA Division II national leader in 3-point field-goal percentage defense, holding their opponents to 24.4%. Indiana (PA) moved into second with a 24.6%.

PINK NIGHT AGAINST CAL STATE LA •The Cougars opened their CCAA season with a 73-62 victory in Los Angeles on Nov. 12.
•The Golden Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak last Saturday with a 70-62 win over visiting Cal State East Bay.
•CSULA leads the conference in blocked shots (89) and blocked shots per game (4.0).
•The Golden Eagles have the highest three-point field-goal percentage in the CCAA at 34.6.
•Sydney Bordonaro is the hottest 3-point shooter in the CCAA, averaging 3.32 per game, which ranks her 11th in the nation.

•Julian’s time of 26.84 in the 200-meter dash was the eighth-fastest time in program history.
GVSU BIG MEET •Grand Valley State’s Big Meet is two separate meets on Friday and Saturday.
•Friday will mark CSUSM’s first time to ever compete in the state of Michigan.
•These will be the Cougars’ final regular-season meets of the indoor season.

THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his second season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•In 2019, Olson’s men’s and women’s squads tallied three CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men’s team earned five All-West Region selections.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).

CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO •The Coyotes won a 3-1 series at Cal State East Bay last weekend, sweeping Friday’s doubleheader by scores of 6-2 and 4-2 before splitting Saturday’s twinbill with a 3-0 loss before recording a 12-3 victory.
•CSUSB opened the season with a 2-3 record at the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas.
•The Coyotes enter the weekend with a .309 batting average while supporting a 2.49 ERA.
•With 41.1 innings in the circle after appearing in all nine games, Kendra O’Cull has tallied 31 strikeouts and 25 walks.
•CSUSM is 3-18 in the all-time series against CSUSB and is 1-9 on the road.
THE EWING FILE •Head coach Stef Ewing enters her second season in charge of the Cougar softball season, finishing last year with a 14-31 record that included a series sweep over Cal Stat East Bay on the road.
•Ewing captured her first win as a collegiate head coach on Feb. 17th as the Cougars won 5-4 in a walk-off over Concordia Portland at CSUSM Softball Field.
•She previously served as the assistant coach at New Mexico State where she helped the Aggies to three WAC Regular Season Conference Championships and two WAC Conference Tournament Championships.

•Like the Cougars, the Toros are also 1-5 to begin the year after losing two of three at home against Concordia Irvine on opening weekend and after being swept in a three-game series at home by Point Loma this past weekend.
•Pierson Loska leads the Toros with a .400 batting average, two home runs, three doubles, eight RBIs, 15 total bases and an OPS of 1.625.
•Tristan Garnett leads the CSUDH pitching staff with 14 strikeouts in two starts and has an ERA of 5.79.
•The Cougars are 12-8 in the all-time series against the Toros.
•CSUSM has won three out of four games against CSUDH in each of the past two seasons.
•Last year in San Marcos, the Cougars won by scores of 7-2 and 9-5.
THE GUILIANO FILE •Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his fourth season at the helm of the CSUSM baseball program.
•Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
•Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
•Guiliano is 61-95 (.391) as CSUSM’s head coach and is 236-331-1 (.416) for his entire head coaching career.
