This Week in Cougar Athletics: April 16-22

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s golf team will participate in the inaugural California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Golf Championships early this week in Sonoma. CSUSM softball squad plays a nonconference doubleheader against Concordia-Irvine on Wednesday at home while the Cougar baseball team playing a split-venue series against Cal State L.A. this weekend. The CSUSM track & field teams compete in Azusa Pacific’s Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday and Friday.

CONCORDIA IRVINE •CSUSM is 4-8 all-time against the Eagles.
•The Cougars dropped both games of their doubleheader last season at CUI by scores of 7-3 and 3-0.
•The Eagles swept Cal State East Bay on Sunday, 4-1 and 6-3.
•CUI is currently third in the PacWest Conference standings.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars earned their first CCAA series victory, taking the first three games over visiting Cal State East Bay; 4-0, 4-2 and 7-2 before their late rally fell short at 5-4 in the series finale.
•Sophomore Karen Roman hit .600 (6-for-10) with a double while junior Rae Camez matched her in hits which included a double and her first home run of the season.
•In the 2018 CCAA softball preseason poll, the Cougars were picked to finish 10th.

MOVING ON UP, IN THE CSUSM RECORD BOOKS •Lauren Wyckoff – Moved into sole possession of No. 3 in the 100 meters after recording a time of 12.33
•Kamarria Rehn – Remained at No. 5 in the 100 meters but improved on her time by four hundredths of a second
•Jolene Widmer – Broke into the top 10 at No. 9 in the 100 meters with a time of 12.65
•Clarissa Garcia – Broke into the top 10 at No. 9 in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.38
•Kylene Shuler – Broke into the top 10 at No. 7 in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.14 meters
•Sarah Montion – Remained at No. 3 in Hammer and No. 4 in Discus but improved in both with throws of 40.48 and 30.09 meters, respectively.

MOVING ON UP, IN THE CSUSM RECORD BOOKS •Giovanni Brooks – Moved up to No. 6 in the 100 meters with a time of 10.92
•Caine Harder – Broke into the top 10 in the 400 meters with a time of 49.55
•Ndoto Strong – Topped his own school record in the Discus with a throw of 47.79
•Demetrius Howard – Remained at No. 3 in Discus but improved his mark with a throw of 46.32

CAL STATE L.A. •CSUSM is 5-7 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
•Last season, the Cougars dropped the first three games of the series (13-12, 9-4, 16-3) before recording a 2-1 victory in the series finale over CSULA.
•Anthony Ayala ranks fourth in hits (53) and eighth in runs scored (31) in the CCAA.
•As a team, the Golden Eagles rank eighth in the CCAA in pitching (5.01 ERA) and ninth in hitting (.272 avg.).

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars won one of their four games to Chico State last weekend. CSUSM came out strong in game one, recording 16 hits in the 8-6 victory over the Wildcats on Friday. The Cougars dropped the final three games by scores of 11-7, 10-4 and 7-2.
•Junior Austin Ott went 8-for-16 with two home runs and five RBIs while classmate Cabot Van Til batted .474 (9-for-19) with two doubles, a triple and a home run on the weekend.
•As a team, CSUSM ranks sixth in batting (.285) and tenth in pitching (6.23 ERA) in the CCAA.
