SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Men’s golf, men’s and women’s track & field, softball and baseball will all be in action this week for Cal State San Marcos Athletics.
Men’s golf will get the week started by competing in the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s (CCAA) Championships at Bayonet & Black Horse in Seaside, California. The action will start with the first two rounds at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday before the final round on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
Men’s and women’s track & field will compete in its final meet before the CCAA Championships at UC Irvine’s Steve Scott Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Anteater Stadium. Friday’s events will begin at 1 p.m. while Saturday’s events will start at noon.
Softball will close its 2019 season with a four-game series at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Friday’s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. while Saturday’s twin bill will begin at noon.
Baseball will wrap up its regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series against Cal Poly Pomona. The Cougars and Broncos will play at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at CSUSM Baseball Field before wrapping up the series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Pomona. Prior to Saturday’s game, CSUSM will honor its 15 seniors.

COUGAR UPDATE
•The Cougars last competed at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on March 18.
•Five CCAA schools took the top five spots in the Shootout with UC Colorado Springs sneaking in at sixth, right in front of CSUSM’s seventh place finish with a 31-over 595.
•Justin Vrzich earned his first top 10 finish as a Cougar after tying for 10th with an even-par 216.
CCAA CHAMPIONSHIP •Cal State Monterey Bay is the host of the 2019 CCAA Championship.
•The teams will play 36 holes in a shotgun format on Tuesday, before playing 18 holes with tee times on Wednesday.
•The Cougars tied for fifth at the 2018 CCAA Championship in Chico, finishing with a 30-over 894.
THE HUTTON FILE •Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•Under Hutton’s leadership, the women’s team won CSUSM’s first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018.
•Both teams qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships last season.

•The Cougars had a very busy weekend by competing in three separate meets at the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Mt. SAC Relays and the Long Beach State Beach Invitational.
•Joshua Litwiller put up an NCAA Division II Provisional time of 30:19.43 in the 10,000-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays – the second-fastest time in program history.
•At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Jonathan Burton posted an NCAA Division II Provisional time of 52.77 in the 400-meter hurdles – the fourth-fastest time in program history.
•Bryan Quintero put up the third-best hammer throw mark in program history at 47.71 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays.
•Nick Heid posted the eighth-best triple jump mark in program history at 13.12 meters at the Long Beach State Beach Invitational.
•In the 100-meter dash at the Bryan Clay Invitational, Alyssia Gonzalez tallied the third-fastest time in program history at 12.29.
•Gonzalez then posted the seventh-fastest 200-meter time in school history at 25.32.
•In the same event, Shareen Estremera’s time of 12.56 tied for the ninth-best time in program history.
•Jenna Hernandez had the seventh-best javelin throw mark in program history at the Long Beach State Beach Invitational with a mark of 32.98 meters.
THIS WEEK AT UC IRVINE •The Steve Scott Invitational will get underway at 1 p.m. on Friday while Saturday’s events will start at noon.
•This will be CSUSM’s final meet before the CCAA Championships in La Jolla at UC San Diego on May 2-4.
THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his first season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track and field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).

THE GUILIANO FILE •Head coach Matt Guiliano enters his third season at the helm of the Cougars baseball program.
•Prior to making his way to San Marcos, Guiliano was the head coach for nine seasons (2008-16) at his alma mater Sioux Falls.
•Guiliano is a 2006 graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.
•Guiliano is 59-90 (.396) as CSUSM’s head coach and is 234-323-1 (.420) for his entire head coaching career.
