This Week in Cougar Athletics: Jan. 29-Feb. 4

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball and softball teams begin the 2018 season this weekend with both playing on the road. The women’s track and field team makes its final trip to Arizona to compete in the Mountain T’s Invitational while the men’s and women’s basketball teams travel north to take on San Francisco State and Sonoma State.

CONCORDIA-IRVINE
•The Eagles, full year of NCAA Div. II candidacy this season, finished 22-28 overall and placed in fifth-place in the PacWest Conference with an 18-19 record in 2017.
•CUI will be led by a pair of sophomores, Jair Donovan and Haloa Dudoit. Donovan, made 48 starts last season and hit .294 with 50 hits, a pair of home runs and drove in 29 runs as a freshman. Dudoit, played and started in all 50 games as a freshman. He led the team in batting average (.328), hits (58) and he was second on the team in stolen bases (12).
•CSUSM is 7-10 all-time against the Eagles and have won the last six meetings dating back to Feb. 13, 2016. The last three games have all been decided by one run.
•In the last meeting, CSUSM took down the Eagles, 10-9, on Feb. 2, 2017 in San Marcos. The Cougars had 13 hits for the game including two each from Anthony Rodriguez and Isaias Torres.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars return 10 players from last season including All-West Region first team and All-CCAA first team selection, Tyler Place.
•CSUSM was tabbed to finish tied for 10th in the 2018 CCAA baseball preseason poll.
•Place led the team in doubles (18), triples (2), total bases (80), slugging percentage (.576), on-base percentage (.480) and stolen bases (17) in 2017. The Cougars also return redshirt junior Austin Ott who missed all of 2017 with an injury. He hit .286 in 48 games as a sophomore in 2016 and was tied for the team lead with 11 doubles.
•The Cougars welcome 20 new faces in 2018 including 14 transfers and six freshman.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE •CSUSM is 2-1 all-time against the Gators.
•The Cougars took care of business on New Year’s Eve with an 82-68 victory over SF State. Senior Raegan Lillie notched her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
•The Gators snapped an eight-game losing streak last Saturday, defeating Stanislaus State 69-61.
•SF State sits in last place in the CCAA standings, relinquishing a conference-high 70.3 points on defense.
•Jhaina Stephens is averaging 14.9 points, ranking her seventh in the CCAA statistics.

SONOMA STATE •CSUSM is 4-1 all-time against the Seawolves.
•Senior Savannah Camp’s old-fashioned 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining in overtime lifted CSUSM to a 63-61 victory over the SSU last Thursday in The Sports Center.
•The Seawolves dropped a 90-78 decision in La Jolla on Saturday and will face the Tritons once again in The Wolves’ Den this Friday night.
•Ugochi Anudokern and Madison Burroughs are ranked No. 10 and No. 11 in the CCAA scoring leaders, averaging 13.3 and 12.6 per game, respectively.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars went 1-1 in CCAA play this past week.
•Prior to CSUSM’s overtime victory against SSU on Thursday, the Cougars fell 86-66 to cross-county rival UC San Diego on Tuesday.
•Camp and Lillie are 1-2 on the team in scoring, averaging 16.4 and 8.7 points per game, respectively. Lillie leads the team with 16 steals.
•CSUSM ranks first in the CCAA in 3-point field goal percentage defense (27.0), second in blocked shots per game (4.18) and defensive rebounds (29.9).

SAN FRANCISCO STATE •The Cougars are 1-2 all-time against the Gators.
•On New Year’s Eve, CSUSM closed out 2017 with an 86-76 win in the last meeting in San Marcos. Senior Josh Spiers scored a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds.
•The Gators have won six of their last seven games and are coming off an 86-73 road loss to Stanislaus State.
•Four players average double-digits in scoring for SF State including Brantley Bynum (15.1), Evan Zeller (14.8), Warren Jackson (14.1) and Chiefy Ugbaja (10.7). The Gators rank second in the CCAA in points per game (77.8).

SONOMA STATE •CSUSM is 2-2 all-time against the Seawolves.
•In the last meeting, the Cougars took down SSU, 64-58, at home on Jan. 25. Senior Ethan Alvano finished 5-of-13 from the field for a game-high 19 points to lead CSUSM.
•The Seawolves are coming off back-to-back losses including a 67-64 road loss at UC San Diego in their last game.
•Armani Nicolis leads the team in scoring (12.8) and is the only player averaging double-digits. SSU ranks fourth in the CCAA in scoring defense, allowing just 68.2 points per game.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars went 1-1 in CCAA play last week. They currently sit in third place in the CCAA standings and are ranked seventh in the latest D2SIDA West Region Poll.
•CSUSM fell 73-65 in a road game at UC San Diego on Tuesday Jan. 23 before taking down SSU at home, 65-58, on Thursday.
•CSUSM leads the CCAA in points per game (81.4), field goal percentage (47.3) and 3-point field goal percentage (41.6).
•Senior Ethan Alvano leads the CCAA in multiple categories including scoring (21.5), assists (5.9), steals (2.4) and minutes (34.8).

CALIFORNIA BAPTIST •CSUSM is 2-12 all-time against the Lancers.
•The Cougars dropped both ends of their doubleheader (5-4, 3-0) against CBU last season.
•The defending PacWest Conference Champion Lancers are picked to repeat in 2018 in the conference preseason poll.
•CBU returns six starters including PacWest Player and Freshman of the Year Caitlyn Lloyd and PacWest Pitcher of the Year Ciara Stapp.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •In the 2018 CCAA softball preseason poll, the Cougars were picked to finish 10th.
•The Cougars return nine players from last year’s roster including four-year letterwinners Karla Bernal, Lindsay Cerulle and Sara Langdon.
•Thirteen new faces grace the Cougars’ 2018 roster including five transfers.
•CSUSM home and conference opener is next weekend against San Francisco State.
