This Week in Cougar Athletics: March 12-18

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball and softball teams are home this weekend, playing four-game series against Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay, respectively. The CSUSM women’s golf team competes in the Augustana College Spring Fling in Palm Desert on Thursday and Friday. The Cougar track & field teams participate in the Point Loma’s Ross & Sharon Irwin Scoring Meet on Saturday.

CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY •CSUSM is 3-7 all-time against the Otters.
•The Cougars dropped all four games at CSUMB last season by scores of 3-0, 9-1, 8-0 and 4-0.
•The Otters were swept at Chico State last weekend, falling 4-0, 6-5, 7-0 and 7-5.
•CSUMB, the 2017 regular season champion, was selected to repeat in the 2018 CCAA Softball preseason coaches’ poll.

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars won the series finale, 10-5, over No. 15 Sonoma State after dropping the first three by scores of 3-1, 4-2 and 17-1 (5 inn.).
•Junior Kat Calderon recorded a team-best .462 batting average after going 6-for-13 with a double in the series.
•Freshmen Jaqlyn Newhouser and Raven LeClair lead the CSUSM offense with .351 and .345 batting averages, respectively.
•In the 2018 CCAA softball preseason poll, the Cougars were picked to finish 10th.

SONOMA STATE •CSUSM is 3-3 all-time against the Seawolves.
•In the last two years, the home team has swept the series with CSUSM winning all three in 2016 and SSU collecting three wins last season in Rohnert Park.
•Dominic Garlhan (1-2) is SSU’s top pitcher with a 2.89 ERA in five starts and 28 innings on the hill.
•As a team, the Seawolves rank last in the CCAA in batting (.240 AVG) and eighth in pitching (5.26 ERA).

CSUSM BREAKDOWN •The Cougars went 1-3 last week at San Francisco State, playing four nine-inning games due to schedule changes.
•Junior Marcus Wilhite went 7-for-15 with .467 batting average with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs in the four-games. Senior Tyler Place notched six hits in the series, with five runs, four RBIs and three stolen bases.
•Senior Aidan Stinnett ranks fourth in the CCAA with a .395 batting average while Wilhite is in a four-way tie for first with seven doubles. Place is third in stolen bases (five) and fifth in runs scored (18) in the conference.
•As a team, CSUSM ranks fourth in batting (.288) and ninth in pitching (5.98 ERA) in the CCAA.

NCAA PROVISIONAL QUALIFIER •Natalie Rodriguez and Salena Gallardo made NCAA Provisional qualifying marks in the 5000m with times of 16:34.24 and 16:56.48, respectively.

MOVING ON UP, IN THE CSUSM RECORD BOOKS •Lauren Wyckoff – No. 3 in the 100m with time of 12.36
•Natalie Rodriguez – No. 2 in the 5000m with a time of 16:34.24
•Salena Gallardo – No. 5 in the 5000m with a time of 16:56.48 (Broke into top 10)
•Sarah Montion – No. 3 in the Shot Put with a throw of 11.12m & No. 4 in the Discus with a throw of 38.40m
