SAN MARCOS, Calif. – This week in Cal State San Marcos Athletics, women’s golf will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship starting on Tuesday.
The Cougars’ national title hunt will take place at the PGA National Resort and Spa in West Palm Beach, Florida, on May 14-18.

FORMAT •All 16 teams and 16 individuals will play 18 holes each day starting Tuesday with an individual champion being declared following 54 holes.
•The top eight teams after 54 holes will be placed into a bracket and seeded based on their 54-hole scores. The pairings for the quarterfinals will be Seed No. 1 vs. Seed No. 8, Seed No. 2 vs. Seed No. 7, Seed No. 3 vs. Seed No. 6 and Seed No. 4 vs. Seed No. 5.
•The teams will compete in head-to-head medal play with each match consisting of five points, with one point being awarded for each individual match, or, in the case of a tied match, two half-points.
•Winning teams will advance to the semifinals and subsequently the finals.
•In the event that a team match is tied after all five individual matches, the total strokes of the five players from each team will be calculated with the winning team having the fewest strokes. If still tied, a sudden-death playoff will occur with all five scores counting from each team to determine the advancing team.
•The quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Friday with the finals scheduled for Saturday.

COUGAR UPDATE •The Cougars fired a tournament-low 289 to secure the spot in the NCAA National Championships with a third-place finish at the West Super Regional on May 8 in Amarillo, Texas.
•Junior Jaime Jacob and freshman Breann Horn each tied for fifth after carding a 7-over 220.
•Junior Savannah Magallon narrowly missed out on finishing in the top 10 despite shooting an even-par 71 in the final round and ended up in a three-way tie for 11th with a 9-over 222.
•The Cougars led the field with 31 birdies in the three rounds.
NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS •This will be the first trip to the big show for the women’s golf team as the Cougars missed out in 2018 after a sixth-place finish at the West Super Regional.
•Women’s golf will be the second team in CSUSM’s NCAA Division II Era to make it to the NCAA National Championships with the women’s cross country team placing eighth out of 32 teams in 2017.
•The West Super Regional consists of teams from the West Region and South Central Region.
•CSUSM is the lone team representing the West Region as the three other teams, Dallas Baptist, West Texas and Oklahoma Baptist, are all from the South Central Region.
•All four individuals representing the West Super Regional are from the West Region with the CCAA’s Megan Daleo of Sonoma State making the cut.
THE HUTTON FILE •Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•Under Hutton’s leadership, the women’s team won CSUSM’s first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018.
•Both teams qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships last season.
