HECKERS SELECTED FOR THE NCAA OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS •Sophomore Jax Heckers will represent CSUSM in the 10,000-meter run at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Kingsville, Texas, on Thursday night.
•Heckers posted an NCAA Division II Provisional time of 35:45.67 at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in late March – the third-fastest time in program history.
•Her time ranks 19th in Division II.
•Heckers will compete against 19 other runners and is one of two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) student-athletes in the field.
•She is just the second Cougar in program history to represent CSUSM at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships as Natalie Rodriguez finished fifth in the 5000-meter run last season.
•This will be CSUSM’s final athletic event of the 2018-19 academic year.
THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his first season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track and field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).
