SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s cross country will all be in action this week for Cal State San Marcos Athletics.
Volleyball will get the week started with a midweek match at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CSUSM will return to The Sports Center to host No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 7 p.m. before heading up to Cal Poly Pomona for a 5 p.m. match on Saturday.
Men’s and women’s soccer will continue their six-game homestand this weekend by hosting San Francisco State and Humboldt State on Friday and Sunday. Friday’s games against the Gators will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. while Sunday’s games against the Lumberjacks will begin at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Men’s and women’s cross country will split up and compete at two meets on Saturday. Some of the Cougars will head to Romeoville, Illinois, for the Lewis Crossover while others will travel down to La Jolla for the UCSD Triton Classic.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM fell in three consecutive sets to Cal State LA last Tuesday night.
•The Cougars followed it with a sweep over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
•With Saturday’s victory, the Cougars raised their home win streak to nine matches with two wins carried over from last season. This is CSUSM’s longest home win streak since the program began in 2011.
•CSUSM’s 17 blocks in Saturday’s win over CSUMB was the most in a three-set CCAA match this season.
•As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM moved up to No. 2 in the conference in blocks per set (2.18) after accumulating a program-high 17 blocks in three sets on Saturday against CSUMB.
•CSUSM is ranked No. 36 in blocks per set (2.18) in the latest NCAA Division II statistics.
•Grecia Cordero-Barr is leading the CCAA in 243 total digs and 4.96 digs per set average, ranking her 61st and 93rd in that nation, respectively.
•Maddy Newcombe’s four aces last week moved her up to No. 2 in the CCAA statistic leaderboard with a .44 aces per set average.
•Newcombe is also ranked in the CCAA block category: second in solo blocks (13) and seventh in total blocks (47).
•CSUSM is fourth in the CCAA South Division standings, just one game behind UC San Diego.
TUESDAY AT TORODOME •CSUSM holds a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series against CSUDH.
•In their last meeting, the Cougars were victorious in a five-set thriller in Carson against the Toros.
•CSUDH went 7-0 in non-conference play this season.
•The Toros opened CCAA play with a 0-4 record before collecting a four-set victory at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
•Against CCAA opponents, CSUDH ranks last in kills per set (10.35) while allowing opponents to tally a conference-high .273 hitting percentage.
•Taylor Benitez-Fanslow is ranked ninth in kills per set (3.00) and aces per set (.40).
•CSUDH is last in the CCAA South Division standings.
SHOWDOWN AGAINST NO. 1 COYOTES •Concessions will be sold for the first time this season at Friday’s match. Items available for purchase will be hot dogs, popcorn, candy, chips and drinks.
•CSUSB’s three-set win over the Cougars last month raised the all-time series lead to 7-1 against CSUSM.
•The Cougars’ lone victory over the Coyotes came in The Sports Center in a five-setter on Oct. 13, 2017.
•The Coyotes have only dropped four sets this season with the latest coming against Cal State LA last Saturday.

•Since facing CSUSM, the Broncos have gone 0-3 at home, being swept by top-ranked CSUSB and falling in four sets to Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
•CSUSM dropped a three-set match in Seaside last season.
•CPP hosts UCSD on Friday before welcoming the Cougars to Kellogg Arena.

THE LEONARD FILE •Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her ninth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
•Leonard has a 169-111 (.604) record as CSUSM’s head coach.
•In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 261-237 (.524) career record.
•Leonard was CSUSM’s first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings in the 2017 season.

THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his second season at the helm of the men’s and women’s cross country after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).
