SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s cross country will all be in action this week for Cal State San Marcos Athletics.

Volleyball will get the week started with a midweek match at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CSUSM will return to The Sports Center to host No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 7 p.m. before heading up to Cal Poly Pomona for a 5 p.m. match on Saturday.

Men’s and women’s soccer will continue their six-game homestand this weekend by hosting San Francisco State and Humboldt State on Friday and Sunday. Friday’s games against the Gators will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. while Sunday’s games against the Lumberjacks will begin at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Men’s and women’s cross country will split up and compete at two meets on Saturday. Some of the Cougars will head to Romeoville, Illinois, for the Lewis Crossover while others will travel down to La Jolla for the UCSD Triton Classic.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM fell in three consecutive sets to Cal State LA last Tuesday night.
•The Cougars followed it with a sweep over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
•With Saturday’s victory, the Cougars raised their home win streak to nine matches with two wins carried over from last season. This is CSUSM’s longest home win streak since the program began in 2011.
•CSUSM’s 17 blocks in Saturday’s win over CSUMB was the most in a three-set CCAA match this season.
•As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM moved up to No. 2 in the conference in blocks per set (2.18) after accumulating a program-high 17 blocks in three sets on Saturday against CSUMB.
•CSUSM is ranked No. 36 in blocks per set (2.18) in the latest NCAA Division II statistics.
•Grecia Cordero-Barr is leading the CCAA in 243 total digs and 4.96 digs per set average, ranking her 61st and 93rd in that nation, respectively.
•Maddy Newcombe’s four aces last week moved her up to No. 2 in the CCAA statistic leaderboard with a .44 aces per set average.
•Newcombe is also ranked in the CCAA block category: second in solo blocks (13) and seventh in total blocks (47).
•CSUSM is fourth in the CCAA South Division standings, just one game behind UC San Diego.

TUESDAY AT TORODOME •CSUSM holds a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series against CSUDH.
•In their last meeting, the Cougars were victorious in a five-set thriller in Carson against the Toros.
•CSUDH went 7-0 in non-conference play this season.
•The Toros opened CCAA play with a 0-4 record before collecting a four-set victory at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.
•Against CCAA opponents, CSUDH ranks last in kills per set (10.35) while allowing opponents to tally a conference-high .273 hitting percentage.
•Taylor Benitez-Fanslow is ranked ninth in kills per set (3.00) and aces per set (.40).
•CSUDH is last in the CCAA South Division standings.

SHOWDOWN AGAINST NO. 1 COYOTES •Concessions will be sold for the first time this season at Friday’s match. Items available for purchase will be hot dogs, popcorn, candy, chips and drinks.
•CSUSB’s three-set win over the Cougars last month raised the all-time series lead to 7-1 against CSUSM.
•The Cougars’ lone victory over the Coyotes came in The Sports Center in a five-setter on Oct. 13, 2017.
•The Coyotes have only dropped four sets this season with the latest coming against Cal State LA last Saturday.
•CSUSB is the top blocking team in NCAA Division II, averaging 2.83 blocks per set.
•The Coyotes’ .307 hitting percentage ranks them second in the nation with Sascha Dominique leading the way as the national leader with a .498 clip.
•For the 13th consecutive year, CSUSB was picked to win the conference regular season and finish first in the South Division of the 2019 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

CONCLUDE WEEKEND AT CPP •With the Sept. 21 win, the Cougars have closed the gap on CPP’s lead of 5-4 in the all-time series.
•Since facing CSUSM, the Broncos have gone 0-3 at home, being swept by top-ranked CSUSB and falling in four sets to Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
•CSUSM dropped a three-set match in Seaside last season.
•CPP hosts UCSD on Friday before welcoming the Cougars to Kellogg Arena.
•Opponents are averaging a conference-high 2.10 aces per set against the Broncos.
•Two Broncos are in the CCAA top 10 in kills per set, Jasminn Parrish (3.22) and Ally Wilder (2.98).
•CPP is fifth in the CCAA South Divison standings, which is where the Broncos were picked picked to finish in the South Division of the 2019 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE LEONARD FILE •Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her ninth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
•Leonard has a 169-111 (.604) record as CSUSM’s head coach.
•In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 261-237 (.524) career record.
•Leonard was CSUSM’s first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings in the 2017 season.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars went 1-1 this past weekend with an overtime win over Cal State San Bernardino and a shutout loss to Cal Poly Pomona.
•Madyson Brown netted the golden goal for CSUSM off a rebounded shot to give the Cougars their second consecutive win.
•The Cougars’ goals-against average of .623 ranks 33rd nationally while their shutout percentage of .556 also ranks 33rd nationally and third in the CCAA.

FRIDAY AGAINST THE GATORS •SF State comes into the weekend winless in conference play after falling 2-1 and 3-0 to Stanislaus State and Chico State, respectively.
•As a team, the Gators’ best team statistic is their 4.38 saves per game – 152nd nationally and sixth in the CCAA.
•Katelyn Patterson ranks second in the conference with 0.5 goals per game.
•CSUSM is 1-3-2 in the all-time series against SF State and is 0-1-1 when playing in San Marcos.
•The Cougars fell 1-0 in last year’s regular-season meeting in San Francisco.
•During the first round of the CCAA Tournament, CSUSM was knocked out by SF State during the ninth round of penalty kicks as the Gators won with a 3-2 edge.
•CSUSM has allowed just one goal against SF State in five of the last six games, but the Cougars haven’t scored a goal against the Gators since 2015.

LUMBERJACKS VISIT THE CAGE ON SUNDAY •Like SF State, HSU is also winless in CCAA play after falling 3-2 and 1-0 to Chico State and Stanislaus State, respectively.
•The Jacks’ lone win of the season was against the NAIA’s William Jessup.
•HSU is averaging 5.75 saves per game – fourth most in the CCAA and 80th nationally.
•Katelin Talbert’s 44 saves rank third in the CCAA.
•CSUSM is 2-0-2 in the all-time series against HSU and is 1-0-1 when playing in San Marcos.
•The Cougars have won the past two meetings against the Jacks by scores of 2-0 and 1-0.
•Danielle Wiens and Alyssa Pigoni had both of CSUSM’s goals last season against HSU.

THE RENNEISEN FILE •Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his sixth year in charge of the women’s program and 14th overall at CSUSM
•Renneisen’s 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
•Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
•As the women’s head coach, Renneisen is 39-34-25 (.526) for his career with the Cougars.

ENDING THE WEEKEND AGAINST HUMBOLDT STATE •The Jacks took a 2-1 loss to Chico State before earning a 3-0 win over Stanislaus State this past weekend.
•HSU has the third-best scoring offense in the nation at 3.00 goals per game.
•The Jacks have scored 24 goals this season – the most in the CCAA and 11th most in the nation.
•Marco Silveira’s five assists lead the conference and rank eighth nationally.
•The Cougars and Jacks are 2-2 in the all-time series and are 1-1 when playing in San Marcos.
•HSU has won the past two matches by scores of 1-0 and 2-1.

THE PULVERS FILE •This season marks the 14th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
•Pulvers has a 114-90-25 (.552) record as CSUSM’s head men’s coach.
•In 24 seasons as a collegiate head men’s soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 240-161-39 (.590) career record.
•He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women’s program.
•From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men’s and women’s soccer teams.

PREVIOUS RACE •Joshua Litwiller clocked in with a time of 24:25.7 at the Capital Cross Challenge on Sept. 28, crossing the finish line first for the Cougars and 13th overall. He led CSUSM to a sixth-place finish.
•Marina McDonough led the women’s team to a 20th-place finish out of 40 teams after logging a time of 21:37.7, placing her 49th overall.

UPCOMING RACES •This will be the second time that the Cougars are competing in the Lewis Crossover.
•Last year, the women’s team finished 12th out of 22 teams while the men placed 11th out of 27 teams.
•This will be the Cougars’ second time competing in the UCSD Triton Classic, where the women’s team finished third out of 11 teams, and the men placed second out of 10 teams last year.
•The men’s squad is ranked No. 19 nationally and No. 3 regionally while the women are ranked No. 9 in the region, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his second season at the helm of the men’s and women’s cross country after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).
