This Week in Cougar Athletics: Oct. 8-14

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The 2018 Cougar Challenge for men’s and women’s cross country will be the lone home event for Cal State San Marcos Athletics this week as men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball hit the road.

The Cougar Challenge will begin with the men’s 8K at 8:30 a.m. at the Mangrum Track & Field on Saturday. The women’s 6K will begin right after at 9:15 a.m. Men’s and women’s soccer will be at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday before concluding the weekend at Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday. Volleyball will travel to Chico State on Friday before wrapping up the weekend at Stanislaus State on Saturday.

PREVIOUS RACE •The CSUSM men’s team finished 11th out of the 27 teams competing at the Lewis Conference Crossover this past weekend in Romeoville, Illinois.
•Sophomore Shea Vavra set the pace for CSUSM for the first time this season as he finished 19th out of 282 runners with a time of 25:16.4 in the men’s 8K.
•On the women’s side, the Cougars finished 12th out of the 28 teams competing and two spots ahead of rival UC San Diego.
•Senior Lisa Flora was the Cougars’ top finisher for the second time this season as she beat her previous best by almost two minutes to place 21st at 22:39.6 in the 5K.

UPCOMING RACE •Saturday’s Cougar Challenge will be the 11th annual race CSUSM has hosted.
•The men were ranked No. 7 in the West Region by the USTFCCCA on Oct. 2 while the women were ranked No. 8.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars dropped three matches last week to No. 14 Cal State L.A., No. 24 Cal Poly Pomona and No. 1 Cal State San Bernardino.

CHICO STATE UPDATE •The Wildcats are next-to-last in the CCAA North Division standings with a 4-7 CCAA record and an 11-8 overall record.
•Chico State has lost four of its last five matches.
•The Wildcats fell in five sets to both Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay last week.
•CSUSM is 2-3 in the all-time series against Chico State and is 1-1 when facing the Wildcats in Chico.

SCOUTING STANISLAUS STATE •The Warriors are tied for third in the CCAA North Division with a 5-5 conference record and a 12-6 overall record.
•In its lone match last week, Stanislaus State fell to Cal State Monterey Bay in four sets at home.
•The Cougars are 3-1 in the all-time series against the Warriors and is 1-1 when playing in Turlock.
•CSUSM has won the past two matches against Stanislaus State.

THE LEONARD FILE •Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her eighth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
•Leonard was CSUSM’s first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings last season.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars chalked up their biggest win in program history as they defeated No. 1 UC San Diego at home on Wednesday.
•An early goal by San Francisco State was the difference maker in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat on the road.

UP NEXT AT CAL POLY POMONA •The Broncos sit in last place in the CCAA standings with an 0-5-1 conference record.
•Cal Poly Pomona has lost four consecutive games and five of its last six.
•Last week, the Broncos took a 1-0 loss at Sonoma State before falling 3-1 at Humboldt State.
•The Cougars are 2-2-2 in the all-time series against the Broncos and have tied in their only two matches at Cal Poly Pomona.

LOOKING AHEAD TO CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO •The Coyotes are seventh in the CCAA standings with nine points and a 3-3 conference record.
•After earning a 2-1 victory at Humboldt State on Friday, CSUSB fell 2-0 at Sonoma State on Sunday.
•CSUSM has yet to lose to CSUSB as the Cougars sports a 1-0-4 record against the Coyotes.
•The Cougars’ lone win came in a 2-0 victory at home last season.

THE RENNEISEN FILE •Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his fifth year in charge of the women’s program and 13th overall at CSUSM
•Renneisen’s 2017 squad was the first CSUSM team sport to compete in the CCAA postseason.
•Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
•As the women’s head coach, Renneisen is 33-26-19 (.545) for his career with the Cougars.

SCOUTING CSUSB •The Coyotes are tied with Cal Poly Pomona for second place in the CCAA standings with 15 points and a 5-1 conference record.
•CSUSB has won its past three games and seven of its last eight.
•The Coyotes have scored at least two goals in their past three matches.
•CSUSB defeated Humboldt State 3-0 on Friday before taking a 2-0 win at Sonoma State on Sunday.

THE PULVERS FILE •This season marks the 13th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
•He notched his 100th win as the men’s head coach on Oct. 7, 2016 in a road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
•In 22 seasons as a collegiate head men’s soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 235-152-37 (.598) career record. He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women’s program.
•From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men’s and women’s soccer teams.
