This Week in Cougar Athletics: Sept. 23-29

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos Athletics will mostly be on the road this week as it competes in eight road events while hosting volleyball on Saturday.

Women’s golf will get the week started at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona, on Monday and Tuesday. They’ll tee off at 8 a.m. both days.

Men’s and women’s soccer will both begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play this weekend on the road at Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay. Games will take place at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Volleyball will travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a Friday night contest at 7 p.m. before coming home to The Sports Center on Saturday to face Cal Poly Pomona at 5 p.m.

Men’s and women’s cross country will compete at the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacramento on Saturday. The men’s 8k will begin at 9:40 a.m. while the women’s 6k will start at 10:40 a.m.

THIS SEASON •The reigning NCAA Division II National Runner-Up team returns to the links with five returners, including NCAA Division II National Champion Jaime Jacob.
•Joining the team this year are freshmen Gilda Castellanos, Mia Hernandez and Lauren Hickam.
•The RJGA Shootout at Estrella was previously called the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate, which the Cougars won in 2018. Then-senior Sarah Garcia and Jacob went 1-2 to lead CSUSM to a five-stroke victory in the field of 19 teams.
•The Cougars will make their fifth appearance in the WNMU-hosted tournament and will look to repeat as champions for a third time.
•For the first time since moving to NCAA Division II, CSUSM will compete in four fall tournaments. The Cougars will next compete in the Dixie State Fall Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) in Utah before traveling to Missouri for the DII National Preview (Oct. 14-15). CSUSM will conclude its fall season on Oct. 21-22 when the Cougars host the DII West Region Preview at The Club at La Costa in Carlsbad.

THE HUTTON FILE •Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men’s program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women’s head coach in 2014.
•The CSUSM women’s team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship Runner-Up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
•Under Hutton’s leadership, the women’s team won CSUSM’s first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019.
•In CSUSM’s first year of being a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in 2017-18, the Cougar men’s and women’s golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.

PREVIOUS WEEK •In a non-conference game against No. 1 UC San Diego, CSUSM took a 2-0 loss at home.
•The Cougars then had to settle for a 0-0 draw in its double-overtime game at Biola.

CCAA OPENER AT CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY •The Cougars will begin their CCAA schedule by visiting the undefeated Otters.
•CSUMB’s lone blemish was a 0-0 draw at Dominican last Monday.
•The Otters finished the week with a 2-1 win in double overtime against Southwestern Oklahoma State at home.
•Lia Kilgore is the Otters’ leading scorer as she has three goals with one assist for the season.
•CSUMB is 4-0 at home this season.
•CSUSM owns the all-time series lead at 3-0-1.
•The Cougars are 1-0-1 when playing in Seaside.
•CSUSM won last year’s game by a score of 1-0 in San Marcos.
•The Otters’ save percentage of .919 ranks second in the CCAA and 24th nationally.

ROUNDING OUT THE WEEKEND AT CAL STATE EAST BAY •The Pioneers went 1-0-1 last week with a 5-0 victory at home against Holy Names and a 0-0 draw on the road at Dominican.
•CSUSM is 4-1 in the all-time series against CSUEB and has won the past three games.
•The Cougars won last year’s contest 2-0 in San Marcos.
•The Cougars are a perfect 3-0 when playing in Hayward.
•CSUSM has outscored CSUEB 9-3 in five total games since 2008.
•Lauren McDougal is one of three CCAA players to lead the league in scoring with four goals this season.

THE RENNEISEN FILE •Head coach Bobby Renneisen enters his sixth year in charge of the women’s program and 14th overall at CSUSM
•Renneisen’s 2018 team made its second consecutive CCAA Tournament appearance in 2018 while also handing No. 1 UC San Diego its lone regular-season loss.
•Between 2006-13, Renneisen was an assistant/associate head coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer teams.
•As the women’s head coach, Renneisen is 37-32-25 (.527) for his career with the Cougars.

PREVIOUS WEEK •CSUSM took a 3-2 win in double overtime over Hawai’I Hilo at home on Wednesday before taking a 1-0 loss at Point Loma on Saturday.
•Juan Camilo Salazar scored two goals, including the game-winning goal, against the Vulcans while putting up a CSUSM single-game record 16 shots.
•Salazar leads the CCAA with 27 shots this season and ranks 33rd nationally with 3.83 shots per game.
•John Williamson ranks fifth in the CCAA for total points with eight.

COUGARS FACE OTTERS IN CCAA OPENER •CSUSM will face the undefeated Otters in the opening game of its CCAA schedule.
•CSUMB defeated UC Santa Cruz 7-2 last Friday at home.
•Both Walmer Martinez and Luis Lopez lead the Otters with five goals this season, but Martinez leads the team with 13 points.
•CSUSM is 4-1 in the all-time series against CSUMB and is 2-1 when playing in Seaside.
•The Cougars won last year’s contest 2-1 in San Marcos.
•The Otters lead the nation in shots per game (21.40) while ranking second for shots on goal per game (10.40), second for total assists (17), fourth for points per game (10.20) and sixth for total points (51).

OFF TO EAST BAY ON SUNDAY •The Pioneers are in the middle of a seven-game homestand.
•Last week, CSUEB earned a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Holy Names before falling 4-2 to Menlo College.
•Zack Mason leads the Pioneers with four points this season.
•East Bay leads the CCAA and ranks 12th nationally for saves per game at 6.8.
•Juan Diego Escalante leads the conference and ranks 29th nationally with 25 total saves.
•CSUSM is 1-2-1 in the all-time series against CSUEB.
•The Cougars will be searching for their first win in Hayward as they’re currently 0-1-1.
•CSUSM earned its first win over the Pioneers last season with a 1-0 victory in San Marcos.

THE PULVERS FILE •This season marks the 14th season for head coach Ron Pulvers at CSUSM.
•Pulvers has a 113-89-23 (.553) record as CSUSM’s head men’s coach.
•In 24 seasons as a collegiate head men’s soccer coach, Pulvers holds a 239-160-37 (.591) career record.
•He was 84-42-24 (.640) while in charge of the CSUSM women’s program.
•From 2006-13, Pulvers led both the CSUSM men’s and women’s soccer teams.

PREVIOUS WEEK •The Cougars dropped their CCAA opener at San Francisco State on Friday, taking the first set before falling in the final three.
•CSUSM rebounded with a conference sweep at Cal State East Bay, hitting a season-high .292 in the match.
•Against the Pioneers, Maddy Newcombe dominated at the net with a .625 attack percentage after tallying 11 kills on 16 attempts and making only one hitting error.

SHOWDOWN AGAINST TOP-RANKED CSUSB •The Coyotes hold a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series against CSUSM.
•The Cougars’ lone victory over the national-powerhouse CSUSB was a five-set thriller in The Sports Center on Oct. 13, 2017.
•CSUSB has only lost three sets in it nine matches, accumulating six sweeps this season.
•Sonoma State prevented a sweep in both team’s conference opener by taking the third set 25-17 but the Coyotes rallied back to collect a 25-23 fourth set victory to secure the match win.
•In their season-opening tournament in Texas, the Coyotes collected wins over two top-10 teams – Minnesota Duluth and Tarleton State.
•For the 13th consecutive year, CSUSB was picked to win the conference regular season and finish first in the South Division of the 2019 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

CCAA HOME OPENER VS. CAL POLY POMONA •The Broncos have a slight lead at 5-3 in the all-time series against CSUSM.
•On Saturday, the Cougars will look to halt the two-match win streak the Broncos have in The Sports Center.
•The Cougars gave the then-ranked No. 24 Broncos three hard-fought sets in their last meeting. After dropping the first set 25-20, CSUSM took CPP to extra points with scores of 26-24 and 27-25.
•The Broncos are off to a slow start with a 3-6 overall record and are 1-1 after their opening weekend of conference play.
•On the road last week, CPP defeated Humboldt State in four sets on Thursday before falling in four at Sonoma State on Saturday.
•CPP was picked to finish fifth in the South Division of the 2019 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

THE LEONARD FILE •Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her ninth season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
•Leonard has a 167-109 (.605) record as CSUSM’s head coach.
•In 16 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 259-235 (.524) career record.
•Leonard was CSUSM’s first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings in the 2017 season.

PREVIOUS RACE •With the success of their first two races, CSUSM entered the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches Poll Top 25 with the men ranked No. 18 and the women at No. 21.
•In the previous race, the men’s squad finished in first at the Cougar Challenge while Senior Joshua Litwiller led the Cougars with a third place finish, completing the 8k course in 24:12.8.
•The women’s team placed second out of seven in the Cougar Challenge as Junior Marina McDonough was the first to cross the finish line for the Cougars and sixth overall with a time of 21.32.2.

UPCOMING RACE •This will be the first time that the Cougars compete in the Capital Cross Challenge.
•The race has been unofficially dubbed the Division II Pre-National Meet since that is the location of the season’s final race on Nov. 23.
•In the USTFCCCA Week 1 Regional Rankings, the men’s team is ranked fifth, joining three other CCAA schools in the top 10, while the women sit sixth with four other conference members.

THE OLSON FILE •Head coach Torrey Olson begins his second season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track and field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
•Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
•Olson served as the head cross country coach the previous three years at Academy of Art.
•In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
•A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary’s College (2012).
