CARLSBAD, Calif. – Law enforcement agencies across San Diego County have recently experienced a significant increase in vehicle thefts involving newer-model Jeep vehicles.
Since August 2025, at least 12 thefts have been reported in Carlsbad, with most occurring during late-night hours. In early May 2026, Carlsbad experienced two additional Jeep thefts.
Through investigative efforts and the use of the city’s Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology, Carlsbad Police officers identified a suspect vehicle believed to be connected to the majority of these crimes. Investigators also determined that shortly after the thefts, the stolen Jeeps and the suspect vehicle were driven into Mexico.
Based on information gathered during the investigation, members of the Carlsbad Police Department and the San Diego County Regional Auto Theft Task Force conducted a coordinated surveillance operation on June 4, 2026, targeting the suspect vehicle and individuals believed to be involved in an organized auto theft crew.
After several hours of surveillance, detectives identified a Jeep that investigators believed had just been stolen by the suspects in the Hillcrest area of San Diego. Carlsbad Police officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, but the driver failed to yield, leading officers on a pursuit along southbound Interstate 5 at speeds reaching approximately 100 miles per hour.
The pursuit continued into Chula Vista, where the stolen Jeep exited the freeway. The pursuit ended near the intersection of H Street and Broadway when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll over.
The driver, identified as Jesus Lupian, 29, of San Diego, was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. After being released from the hospital, he was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on charges including vehicle theft, felony evading, conspiracy to commit vehicle theft, and possession of burglary tools.
Shortly after Lupian’s arrest, Carlsbad Police officers conducted a traffic stop on the original suspect vehicle that had been identified during the investigation. Two additional suspects were taken into custody: Omar Quezada, 22, and Antonio Sanchez, 24, both residents of Mexico. They were arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, conspiracy to commit vehicle theft, and possession of burglary tools. Both were booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
This investigation highlights the effectiveness of coordinated regional efforts and advanced technology in combating organized auto theft. The Carlsbad Police Department reminds the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
