UPDATE: Death Investigation – Vista Detention Facility

Investigation and Medical Examiner find death to be accidental

LOCATION: 325 S. Melrose Drive, Vista

DECEASED: Antonio Miguel Gonzaba, 39-years-old

On November 24, 2020, at about 3:20 p.m., deputies at the Vista Detention Facility found an inmate, thirty-nine-year-old Antonio Gonzaba, unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately performed lifesaving measures until relieved by fire department personnel. Unfortunately, Gonzaba was pronounced deceased at the facility.

Gonzaba was booked into custody by the San Diego Police Department on September 4, 2019, for the charges of:

290.018(B) PC – Failure to Register as a Sex Offender

594(A)(B)(1) PC – Felony Vandalism

530.5(C)(1) PC – Identity Theft

3056 PC – Parolee Violation

8 counts of 261(A)(2) PC – Rape by Force or Fear

15 counts of 287(C)(2)(A) PC – Sodomy

6 counts of 459 PC – Burglary

5 counts of 211 PC – Robbery

3 counts of 422 PC – Criminal Threats

5 counts of 136.1(B)(1) PC – Witness Intimidation

245(A)(4) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon

4 counts of 236/237 PC – False Imprisonment

10851(A) VC – Vehicle Theft

2 counts of 220(b) PC – Sexual Assault

487(A) PC – Grand Theft

4 counts of 261(1)(2) PC – RAPE: Victim Incapable of Consent

7 counts of 288(C)(2)(A) PC Lewd and Lascivious Acts on Dependent Adult

The Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death. No evidence of foul play was discovered.

The Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and completed their reports. They determined the cause of death to be Fentanyl, Bupropion, Gabapentin, and Trazodone toxicity. The manner of death was determined to be accident.
