Vista Fire Department Conducts Training at Old Bobier Elementary School

Vista, California – Over the weekend, the Vista Fire Department, along with several surrounding agencies, embarked on a crucial training exercise at the old Bobier Elementary School. The training comes just before the school is slated for complete demolition to make way for a new, state-of-the-art educational facility.

Rigorous Training for Firefighters

The training session was meticulously planned, with both Truck Companies and Engine Companies participating. Here are the key highlights:
1. Vertical Ventilation Training
Truck Companies focused on vertical ventilation techniques. This critical skill involves creating openings in roofs to release heat, smoke, and gases during a fire incident. Proper ventilation enhances safety and improves firefighting efficiency.
2. Hose Deployment Practice
Engine Companies honed their hose deployment skills. Negotiating the maze of breezeways and classrooms within the old school building provided a realistic scenario for practicing hose handling and coordination.
3. Forcible Entry Techniques
Both Truck and Engine Companies had the opportunity to practice forcible entry techniques. With over 50 doors in the school, firefighters learned how to swiftly gain access to buildings during emergencies.

Prioritizing Firefighter Safety

Vista Battalion Chief Miles Sweeney emphasized the significance of this training:

“As the training chief officer, I put firefighter safety at the top of my list. Training is the backbone of our fire department. It not only prepares our personnel but also increases operational speed and ensures proper execution while minimizing injuries.”

Real-Life Scenarios Enhance Skills

Chief Sweeney further highlighted the value of training on actual buildings: “To have the opportunity to train on real structures with different construction types only multiplies the skills learned by our firefighters. It’s essential for them to experience various scenarios, as it prepares them for the unpredictable challenges they may face in the line of duty.”

The Vista Fire Department remains committed to continuous improvement and readiness, ensuring that their firefighters are well-prepared to protect the community.
