The City of Vista’s Fire Department (VFD) is continually working to achieve and maintain the highest level of professionalism and efficiency for the Vista community it services. One way this is accomplished is through a strategic planning process. The VFD recently completed a new five-year strategic plan which runs from 2020 through 2025. “A Strategic Plan provides a roadmap for continued excellent services,” said Fire Chief Ned Vander Pol. “For Vista, this means we update our plan every five years, as we prepare to meet the many challenges and opportunities in emergency service for the future ahead.”
The new plan focuses on seven goals which highlight the VFD vision and incorporates its core values. The goals cover the fire prevention bureau, physical equipment, wellness, training, anticipating future needs, providing timely and efficient services, and improving communications.
“The updated Plan will provide the framework to guide where the VFD will be in five years and how to accomplish this,” said Chief Vander Pol. “It outlines the policies and operations of how the department will continue providing high quality service to the community, while ensuring the efficient use of City resources and funds.”
The Vista Fire Department covers 36.5 square miles for fire protection and ambulance service for the City of Vista and for the rural fire district. Last year the total number of calls for service was 14,791. The City of Vista Fire Department is an Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. The accreditation is recognized as a worldwide measure of excellence in the fire service. The Vista Fire Department is one of only 148 agencies worldwide and one of 17 across the state of California to have received this designation and is the only accredited city fire department in San Diego County.
