The Vista Unified School District is one of north San Diego County’s largest educational agencies. It is comprised of 29 schools which serve over 20,000 students ranging from preschool to high school. The district spans 39 square miles including most of Vista, a large portion of eastern Oceanside, some unincorporated areas, and even areas of Carlsbad and San Marcos. Vista Unified also includes one of the county’s largest adult-education programs with approximately 3,000 students enrolled each year.
Schools in the district include: sixteen elementary schools, five middle schools, three comprehensive high schools, two alternative high schools, two schools for students with special needs, one blended learning/independent study middle/high school, five independent charter schools, one adult school.
School Board Members establish a shared vision for the schools that they represent which reflects a consensus of the board community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities such as adopting annual budgets and issuing interim financial reports adopting the school calendar negotiating contracts with employees (including the hiring of superintendents) approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools.

Vista Unified School District Board Member, Seat 3 –Martha Alvarado
Area 3 encompasses the eastern edge of Oceanside and the southwestern corner of Vista. It ranges from Town Center North on it’s northern extremity and is bounded by the Highway 78 at it’s southern end.
Schools in Area 3 include: Empresa Elementary, Grapevine Elementary, Temple Heights Elementary, Roosevelt Middle School, and Casita Center for Technology, Science, and Math
