On Saturday, February 23rd, Mainstreet in downtown Vista was closed off for This exposition was organized by Legendary Event Management and sponsored by the City of Vista. From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., event attendees were welcome to participate in the various free activities and health care services.

“We’re trying to make being fit something fun,” said Paola, a community health specialist from the Vista Community Clinic booth, “We’re trying to make a connection with kids and families. With kids especially, it’s important to promote a healthy lifestyle.”

Both the Vista Community Clinic and the San Marcos Lions Club were providing children with free health screenings. A dentist from the Vista Community Clinic, a local health organization, provided dental check-ups in search of cavities or any irregularities that should be treated by a family dentist. The VCC was also offering nutritional health information as well as educating attendees about the harmful effects of toxic cleaners. The San Marcos Lions Club, a nonprofit organization that works towards serving its community, was testing the eyes of children for any debilitating eye disorders. Vision is incredibly important for education, so ensuring that children get the proper eyewear and treatment is essential.

The Fit and Fun Expo offered a plethora of activities for those who passed through. The booths lining Main Street had much to offer; An invigorating karate cardio workout, a fun Irish dance lesson, an intriguing yoga demonstration, and a super zumba challenge. Each activity not only brought an interactive experience to participants, it also allowed them to explore the fitness opportunities available in Vista.

The general mood of the afternoon was pleasant, enriched by the steel drum performance given by Kainga Music, another local non-profit organization.

Event attendees received complimentary bright blue Vista Community Clinic tote bags which were distributed by David Mear, the event coordinator from Legendary Event Management. Each bag included pamphlets from the event booths and various coupons from surrounding restaurants.

“We’re doing it on behalf of the downtown merchants, the city is supporting us with a grant, and it’s looking good so far,” said Mear, “Hopefully, with the warm weather we will get a good amount of people to come out.”

Mear explained that for the past five years, this event was primarily a health and safety fair. Since this is the first year that the Vista Community Clinic participated, it was decided that the focus of the event would be fitness, in hopes of creating a more fun family atmosphere. As a consequence, the event was somewhat lacking in participants. In the future, the Fit and Fun Expo is expected to be larger and attract more attendees.
