In January 2019, I voted to establish a pilot program to waive County fees for accessory dwelling units (ADUs, or “Granny Flats”) within the unincorporated areas for five years. As the program’s expiration approaches, I’m pleased to report that approximately 1,500 ADU projects have benefitted, with a cumulative savings of nearly $15 million to applicants.
With the pilot program set to expire on January 9, 2024, I’m asking my colleagues to extend it for another five years. Not only has the program been successful, ADUs have become an essential tool in our approach to addressing the difficult housing crisis. They can be built within existing communities; they increase options for first-time home buyers, young adults looking to start a family, and older adults looking to age in place, and they may provide a source of income (rent) to the primary resident.
The vote will take place on Tuesday, and I will keep you updated on the progress.
