California’s 50th congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of California, and encompasses the central and northeastern parts of San Diego County and a small part of Riverside County. It has been vacant since the resignation of Duncan D. Hunter on January 13, 2020. The seat will be filled by Republican candidate Darrell Issa or Democrat candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar. NC Daily Star video interviewed both candidates.
A 10-year army veteran,+Darrell Issa was the founder and C.E.O. of Directed Electronics — a successful car security company based in San Diego County. After selling his business, Darrell Issa was elected to The United States House of Representatives where he was later elected by his peers to serve as the Chairman of The House Committee on Oversight and Reform. In this position, he personally identified more than 10 billion dollars in government waste, theft, and mismanagement on behalf of American Taxpayers. Ammar was born in East County and raised by his working-class Latina mother. Growing up with a single parent, Ammar worked as a janitor and grounds keeper at his church to help support his family. His mom and faith inspired him to graduate from SDSU and pursue a life of service. Before running for office, he worked at the White House, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and as a federal official at the U.S. Department of Labor serving working families like the ones he grew up with.
Ammar is tired of politicians looking down at the people he has looked up to his whole life. He’s running for Congress to bring some East County grit to Washington, honor his mother’s generation, and help people live and retire with dignity.
As a small business owner, Ammar is fed up with unnecessary government red tape. He’ll fight for tax cuts for the middle class, veterans and small businesses – not the rich. He’ll prioritize lowering prescription drug costs by holding pharmaceutical companies accountable; protect Medicare and Social security; secure our borders and promote legal immigration, and help hardworking Americans afford the cost of housing, healthcare, and education.
Ammar will never sell-out to corporations and special interests. His campaign is funded by people.
Ammar pledge’s to honor the American traditions and values handed down by our Founders. And as your independent voice in Congress, He’ll always put people first. For more information go to: https://www.campacampaign.com/meet-ammar
