Women’s Basketball Big Third Quarter Carries CSUSM Over CPP, 63-45

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (11-3, 8-1 CCAA) clinched its fifth consecutive win with a 63-45 victory at Cal Poly Pomona (9-5, 5-4 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars held a 13-10 lead after the first quarter.
Both teams put up 11 points in the second quarter as CSUSM took a 23-20 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter was all CSUSM as the Cougars outscored the Broncos, 20-8.
The Cougars went 6-of-10 (60%) from the field with a 3-of-5 (60%) performance from behind the arc in the third quarter.
CSUSM made it a double-digit lead at 39-29 after Ava Ranson sunk a 3-pointer with 1:12 remaining in the third quarter.
The Cougars took their largest lead of the game at the 1:35 mark of the fourth quarter when Gallegos hit a 3-pointer in the corner in front of the CSUSM bench that made it 60-42.
FAST BREAK
CSUSM shot 44.4% (20-of-45) from the field while holding the Broncos to 25.0% (16-of-62) field-goal percentage.
From behind the arc, the Cougars went 8-of-19 (42.1%) to CPP’s 3-of-20 (15.0%).
Vasquez collected her ninth double-double of the season (22 pts, 17 reb.) and the 35th of her collegiate career.
CSUSM won the battle of the boards, 41 to 32.
The Broncos scored just 11 points off CSUSM’s 18 turnovers while the Cougars tallied 12 points from CPP’s 13.
CSUSM led for 85% of the game while Pomona led for only 9%.
The Cougars tallied eight 3-pointers for the fourth time this season, just one shy from their season best.
With the win, CSUSM evened the series record at 4-4 when playing in Kellogg Arena while extending the lead in the all-time series to 8-6.
