Women’s Basketball Cougars Outplay Gators in Second Half for 62-42 Win

SAN FRANCISCO – Behind a big second half, the No. 19/RV Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (17-3, 14-2 CCAA) recorded its fourth consecutive win with a 62-42 victory at San Francisco State (7-15, 3-13 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars and Gators ended the first and second quarters tied to enter the halftime even at 25-all.
CSUSM’s defense limited the Gators to just five points in the third quarter, concluding the 10 minutes at 16.7% (2-of-12) in shooting.
In the final quarter, the Cougars’ offense exploded by outscoring SF State 20-12 behind a 72.7 field-goal percentage (8-of-11).
The Cougars ended the third and began the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run capped by a fast-break layup to put CSUSM up 46-30 with 8:38 on the clock.

FAST BREAKS
CSUSM got 26 points from its bench while SF State’s contributed 16.
The Cougars won the battle of the board, 43-37.
CSUSM committed 17 turnovers to the Gators’ 13.
The Cougars collected 28 points in the paint to SF State’s 16.
SF State’s 42 points were the second-lowest recorded by a CSUSM opponent this season. Chico State fell 54-41 to the Cougars on Dec. 3 in The Sports Center.
Extending their win streak to seven games, the Cougars moved to 10-2 in the all-time series against the Gators.
CSUSM is now 5-1 when playing in San Francisco.
The Cougars remains in second place in the CCAA standings, one game behind conference leader Cal State Dominguez Hills (15-1 CCAA) and two games ahead of third-place Cal State LA (12-4 CCAA).
