Women’s Basketball CSU San Marcos Moves Into First Place in CCAA with 80-54 Win at CSU Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (9-3, 6-1 CCAA) took sole possession of first place in the CCAA standings with an 80-54 win at Cal State Monterey Bay (3-9, 1-6 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon in the Otter Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Reilly got things started early with a quick, open layup to give CSUSM a 2-0 lead.
The Otters answered with back-to-back layups of their own to go up 4-0.
An old-fashion 3-point play by Reilly put CSUSM back on top at 11-9 at the 4:08 mark in the first quarter.
Six unanswered points by the Cougars capped by a FitzGerald 3-pointer gave them a 19-13 lead with 1:16 remaining in the opening 10 minutes.
The first quarter ended with CSUSM up 19-16 after the Cougars shot 61.5% (8-of-13) to CSUMB’s 41.2% (7-of-17).
The Cougars took their first double-digit lead of the day on a FitzGerald 3-pointer to go up 32-22 at 5:54 in the second quarter.
CSUSM closed out the first half on a Vasquez jumper to go up by 20 points (45-25).
CSUSM outscored Monterey Bay 26-9 in the second quarter.
The Cougars shot 63.0% (17-of-27) in the first half while CSUMB was 32.4% (11-of-34).
CSUSM outrebounded Monterey Bay 21-13 while tallying 13 points off CSUMB’s seven turnovers.
Vasquez went 5-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 at the charity stripe to lead all shooters in the first 20 minutes.
The Cougars continued their dominance in the third quarter, outscoring the Otters 17-11 to enter the final 10 minutes with a 62-36 lead.
A Vasquez putback gave CSUSM a 30-plus lead at the 8:31 mark of the fourth quarter at 69-38.
Both teams posted 18 points in the fourth quarter.

FAST BREAK
The Cougars moved to 6-1 in CCAA action, holding a one-game lead over second-place Stanislaus State.
CSUSM shot a season-high 53.6% (30-of-56) from the field while holding the Otters to a 33.3% (19-of-57) field-goal percentage.
Vasquez collected her seventh double-double of the season (18 pts, 10 reb.) and the 33rd of her collegiate career.
The Cougars had a slight edge in total rebounds at 35-34, but the Otters had an offensive advantage at 16-9.
The Otters only converted 12 points off their 16 offensive boards.
CSUSM went 14-of-16 (87.6%) at the free throw line to CSUMB’s 14-of-19 (73.7).
The Cougars led for 82.8% of the game.
CSUSM dished out 16 assists to CSUMB’s six with Reilly recording a game-high four.
The Cougars tallied 42 points inside the paint while the Otters notched only 28 points.
CSUSM extended its win streak over the Otters to 11 and is 6-2 when playing in Seaside.

UP NEXT
CSUSM will remain on the road next week, traveling to Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
