Women’s Basketball CSUSM Rains 3-Pointers In 74-69 Win Over CPP

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team (15-4, 12-2 CCAA) made a program-record 15 3-pointers en route to a 74-69 victory over Cal Poly Pomona (13-6, 9-5 CCAA) on Thursday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars took a quick 16-4 lead following the first quarter after shooting 38.5% (5-of-13) to CPP’s 16.7% (2-of-12).
CSUSM went on a 14-0 run that was capped by a 3-pointer by FitzGerald at 3:20 that made it 33-11 Cougars.
CSUSM continued its domination, outscoring the Broncos 18-10 in the second quarter to take a 34-14 lead into the halftime break.
The Cougars got 17 of their 34 first-half points off CPP’s 12 turnovers while the Broncos were not able to capitalize on CSUSM’s eight turnovers at all.
CSUSM held a 46-36 lead entering the final 10 minutes of play after the Broncos outscored the Cougars 22-12 in the third quarter.
CPP cut CSUSM’s lead to five points (72-67) with six seconds remaining in the game.
A pair of made free throws by Truitt Reilly clinched the win with four seconds on the clock to make it 74-67.
The Cougars sunk six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter with Tameilau going 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.
FAST BREAK
The Cougars are in first place in the CCAA standings with a two-game lead over second-place Chico State.
CSUSM’s 15 3-pointers set a new program record for the most in a single game, breaking the previous record of 13 collected at Cal State LA on Jan. 2, 2022.
Five different Cougars – Tameilau, Gallegos, FitzGerald, Malia Mastora, Ava Ranson – recorded three 3-pointers to break the record.
CSUSM led for 95% of the game while CPP led for just 24 seconds.
Vasquez collected her 12th double-double of the season (13 pts, 14 reb.) and the 38th of her collegiate career.
CSUSM outrebounded the Broncos, 50-33, while CPP had a slight edge on the offensive boards at 15-14.
The Cougars matched their season-best of 20 assists while CPP tallied only eight.
CSUSM committed a season-high 22 turnovers to CPP’s 14 but were able to convert 20 points while the Broncos were only able to record 19 points off turnovers.
The Cougars got 20 points from their bench while the Broncos only got eight.
CSUSM extended its win streak over CPP to four games while leading the all-time series at 9-6.
