Vista, CA — The City of Vista will be officially proclaiming May 2026 as National Water Safety Month at the May 26th City Council meeting, recognizing the importance of education, awareness, and community action in preventing drowning and water-related injuries.
Drowning remains a leading cause of unintentional injury and death, particularly among children. Through this proclamation, the City encourages residents of all ages to take proactive steps to stay safe in and around pools, beaches, and other bodies of water.
The City of Vista continues to support water safety through programs and partnerships that provide essential education and resources. The Wave Waterpark offers swim lessons, aquatic programs, and public education designed to equip individuals and families with life-saving skills. Scholarship opportunities are also available to help ensure access for families in need Welcome | City of Vista Scholarship Programs. The scholarship application window closes May 31, 2026.
In addition, the Vista Fire Department plays a critical role in emergency response, prevention, and community outreach, helping residents stay prepared and protected in and around the water.
“Water safety is a shared responsibility,”
Margaret Hamer, the Recreation and Community Services Director emphasized, encouraging the community to learn how to swim, practice active supervision, understand water hazards, and be prepared to respond in an emergency.
As part of National Water Safety Month, the City invites residents, families, and visitors to take the Water Safety Pledge.
✔️ Never swim alone
✔️ Stay away from pool drains
✔️ Always jump in feet first
✔️ Follow all pool rules
Those who submit their pledge to the Wave Waterpark or to a Vista Fire Station will be added to a weekly opportunity drawing for City program tickets and passes.
The City of Vista encourages the community to participate in local programs and take advantage of resources offered throughout the month to help build a safer, more informed community in May and throughout the year.
