For more than three decades, the Vista Rod Run has brought the sights and sounds of classic automobiles to the streets of historic downtown Vista. What began as a community car show in 1990 has grown into one of North County’s longest-running and most popular automotive traditions.

The first Vista Rod Run rolled into downtown on a hot Sunday morning in August 1990. The event was created as a way to attract residents and visitors to the downtown business district while celebrating Southern California’s deep connection to classic cars, hot rods and custom vehicles.

The Vista Village Business Association, now known as Discover Vista, played an important role in organizing and developing the event. Longtime Vista community leader Eleanor Hutchins was among the people involved with the association who helped coordinate and promote the Vista Rod Run during its early years.

Over the years, the Rod Run continued to expand. What started as a local gathering developed into a major regional show featuring hundreds of classic cars, vintage trucks, muscle cars, street rods, restored vehicles and custom creations.

Owners have traveled from throughout San Diego County and neighboring communities to display vehicles that often represent years of work. Some cars have been restored to their original factory condition, while others have been modified with custom engines, paint, upholstery, and bodywork.

The show is about more than polished chrome and powerful engines. It has also become an important community gathering. Families walk through the closed downtown streets, talk with vehicle owners, and enjoy music, vendors, restaurants, breweries, and local shops.

The location has always been an important part of the event’s character. Historic Main Street and the surrounding downtown blocks provide a fitting background for vehicles representing different eras of American automotive history.

The Vista Rod Run has also helped bring attention and customers to downtown businesses. Restaurants, stores, and breweries benefit from the thousands of visitors who come to see the cars and spend the day exploring Vista.

Throughout its history, the show has included awards in numerous categories. Past categories have recognized outstanding Chevrolets, Fords, Mopars, muscle cars, original vehicles, customs and automobiles from different decades.

In recent years, the event has featured approximately 350 classic cars and trucks. Organizers have also expanded the activities and types of vehicles included in the show. The 2025 event introduced an off-road vehicle category and expanded into the area near the Cinepolis theater, where activities for children and families were offered.

The 2026 Vista Rod Run

The tradition will continue with the 36th Annual Vista Rod Run on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in historic downtown Vista. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hundreds of classic cars, trucks and specialty vehicles are expected to line the downtown streets. Vehicle owners will compete for approximately 40 trophies, and spectators will be able to enjoy music, automotive vendors, downtown shopping, restaurants and breweries.

Admission for spectators is free.

The 2026 event is being presented by Discover Vista Village and The Perfect Event, Inc. Vehicle owners interested in entering the competition are encouraged to register in advance through the official Vista Rod Run organizers.

After 36 years, the Vista Rod Run remains more than a car show. It is a celebration of craftsmanship, nostalgia, local business and community spirit.

Each vehicle has a story, whether it has been passed down through a family, rescued from years of storage or carefully rebuilt one part at a time. Together, those stories have helped make the Vista Rod Run a treasured North County tradition and one that continues to bring new generations of automobile enthusiasts to downtown Vista.
