The City of Vista has been awarded $2.3 million in state grant funding to help build a new park at the city’s gateway entrance on Civic Center Drive and Pala Vista Drive. The Statewide Park Program (SPP) is the largest park related grant program in California. The competitive program creates new parks and recreation opportunities in underserved communities across California.
Currently, the City’s new park plans are in the design phase with ASR Landscape Architecture contracted to design the site. The park will include two playgrounds, a climbing tree, public art, a passive recreation area, and a walking path.
In 2016, the City purchased the park site property with the goal of creating more space for residents to enjoy the outdoors. “We are pleased to have received the state funding to build this park. Our goal is to develop a small community park and to create a gateway entrance into the city,” said Mayor Judy Ritter.
“The project meets two of our City Council goals: #1 To decrease blight and improve the City’s image; #2: Add additional park space.”
The park is expected to be constructed and open to the public by spring, 2022.

The recent round of SPP grants awarded a total of $254,942,000 to 62 statewide projects statewide. The State received 478 application submittals. In San Diego County, the City of Escondido and County of San Diego Parks & Recreation were also awarded funding.
