Carlsbad City Council Member Cori Schumacher notified the Carlsbad City Clerk Friday morning of her resignation from the City Council, effective immediately. According to the Carlsbad Municipal Code, which is a collection of the city’s laws, the District 1 vacancy can be filled by City Council appointment or a special election.
Council Member Schumacher was elected to an at-large seat on the City Council in November 2016. Following the October 2019 resignation of District 1 City Council Member Barbara Hamilton, Council Member Schumacher was elected in March 2020 to fill the remainder of that term, which expires in November 2022. The city transitioned to electing City Council members by district starting in November 2018.
District 1 covers the northwest part of the city, including the downtown village area and the barrio.
