The Carlsbad Unified School District 2023 Champions, seventeen seniors from Sage Creek High School and Carlsbad High School, introduced themselves to the attendees at the monthly YES meeting and shared information about their program and their interaction with elementary students in the school district. The mission of the CUSD Champions is to serve as role models for the youth of the Carlsbad Schools and community. In a statement from Rosemary Eshelman, director of the program, “These exceptional ambassadors are committed to their academic achievement, demonstrating inclusiveness and character to the younger students of CUSD and the community and model this by living with integrity and making positive choices.”
Each of the seventeen gave a short presentation about the importance of the program and what stood out to them as they worked in the various schools in the district. They also finished by telling the group what college they will attend after graduation. Some of the core values the Champions shared with the group included emphasizing leadership to the younger students, stressing accountability and organization, becoming life-long learners, becoming involved in extra-curricular programs, making career and technical choices as they move through the education process, establishing strong communication skills and learning how to collaborate with groups. Above all, they stress the importance of becoming a person of good moral character with critical thinking skills.
The process of becoming a CUSD Champion involves an application and interviews. Rosemary said for the program the elementary school teachers are contacted via email to set-up various times for the Champions to visit their classrooms and to take part in working with the students. Their involvement ranges from reading to the students, speaking to them one on one or in groups and taking part in a variety of other activities with the students. A short question and answer session was held after the presentation.
