Since 1971, Congress has combined Lincoln’s Birthday and Washington’s Birthday into one long weekend celebrated on the third Monday in February, February 17th this year, and called President’s Day honoring all those that have served as President of the United States. This federal holiday is an official state holiday in most states under various names. Schools and all federal agencies are closed and most banks. This year Lincoln’s Birthday is February 12th and Washington’s Birthday is February 22nd, not federal holidays. Historically the holiday was used to honor first George Washington, beginning in 1879, then to honor Abraham Lincoln. Today, the day is to honor all who served as our nation’s Commander in Chief. Various celebrations, parades and other activities take place, especially in Washington, D.C. If you happen to be in Virginia on President’s Day, you can visit Mount Vernon free of charge, the former home of George Washington. There is one food you could enjoy on this day that is associated with President’s Day – have a slice of cherry pie.
Happy President’s Day, February 17th and enjoy your day off!
