Sleep in Heavenly Peace

0

By Mary Bishop
This past August, a group of about 40 people helped build beds for kids who don’t have one. This was the first ever “bed build” for Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s (SHP) San Diego Chapter. Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) believes that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional, and mental support of a child.   All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. SHP schedules “bed-builds” in parking lots along with a group of dedicated volunteers to build, assemble, and deliver top-notch beds to children and families in need.

Volunteers at the 1st North County bed build consisted of every age, spanning from 4yrs to 80yrs of age. The bed build was well organized and structured with an assembly line consisting of key stations to make volunteering easy for all ages. There was a miter saw cutting station, sanding station, headboard assembly station, and the branding station. The beds are partially assembled during the build, while the final assembly takes place inside the family’s home. No experience is necessary as everyone has a chance to learn how to use the woodworking tools (saws, drills, sanders, hammers and many other pieces of equipment).

Applying for a bed is really simple. There is a form that one fills out on the SHP website where the registrant describes their current sleeping situation. After the application is received, a team member from SHP contacts them to talk through the details. Currently, they are accepting applications from Oceanside and Vista residents.

Bed delivery is where the magic happens. Another group of dedicated volunteers gets together to deliver and assemble the bed at the family’s home. You get to witness the laughter and sparkle in a child’s eye as they watch their bed being built. The children receiving these beds have typically been sleeping on the floor, the couch or sharing a bed with someone. What child wouldn’t be excited about receiving a new bed complete with new pillows and bedding? They even get to help with the assembly, which is like the cherry on top.

The cost to build a bed is about $250. This includes lumber (discounted from Lowe’s), mattress, sheets, comforter and a pillow. Sleep in Heavenly Peace has partnered with Lowes in order to receive a discount on the lumber, and the first 10 mattresses, sheets and pillows are currently being donated by Ashley Furniture.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace has over 200 chapters around the U.S. The August bed build was orchestrated by Steve and Marie Hoveln who started this new chapter for San Diego North County. If you’d like to get involved or support this organization, there are a few ways.

A monetary donation or Lowe’s gift card allows them to purchase more materials and build more beds for kids in North County.

Sign up to help with the next bed build on September 10th. It’ll take place in the parking lot at North Coast Church in Vista from 9am-12pm. It will be rescheduled in the event of rain.

All Vista Unified Back To School Success

0

All Vista Unified schools had a wonderful start to the school year last week. It was great to see excited students reconnecting with their friends and teachers. At the elementary level, students engaged in tours of the campus, explored their classrooms, and started to engage in reading, math, writing, and other subjects. At the middle and high school level, students and staff made a smooth transition to the new start and end times. We are noticing that the new start and end times may actually relieve some of the traffic congestion across the city and in parking lots. Secondary students were excited to be back on campus with their peers. Each campus had different activities planned to help students reconnect with their school and settle into the learning environment. Many of the secondary schools are already into their season in fall sports, band, and other extracurricular activities. In fact, teams have already engaged in competition with other schools. Vista Unified is set to have a fantastic school year!

Carlsbad City Library Ends Late Fines

0

The Carlsbad City Library is eliminating late fines for overdue items that are returned to the library as part of its continuing efforts to ensure the library remains easy to use and accessible for everyone.

Effective Sept. 1, the change means that fines for overdue items will be forgiven, including any outstanding fines, for all items that are returned back to the library. Fees for lost or damaged items and interlibrary loans will still apply.

Getting rid of late fines has become a national movement among libraries over the last several years. Studies show that penalties like fines for overdue items disproportionately affect vulnerable populations who need library resources to thrive. In 2019, the National Library Association passed a resolution stating that imposing monetary fines creates a barrier to library and information services.

“The Carlsbad City Library aims to be accessible and open to as many members of the community as possible and doing away with late fines is an important part of our efforts,” said Deputy Library Director Sheila Crosby. “We’re thrilled to announce this change, knowing it will encourage more people to engage with the library and benefit from its essential materials and services.”

Users are encouraged to contact their local Carlsbad City Library location to ensure their contact information is up to date. The library will provide two courtesy notifications when items are overdue.

After 28 days overdue items will be marked as lost and the cardholder will be billed for the item’s cost, plus processing fees. When a lost item is returned, any associated bills will be cancelled. Existing fees for lost or damaged items, interlibrary loans and accounts referred to collections will still need to be paid or resolved.

Officers Arrest Two for Robbery at Daniel’s Jewelers

CARLSBAD, Calif. — On September 7, at 4:07 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery that just occurred at Daniel’s Jewelers, located at 2525 El Camino Real.

The investigation revealed that two black male adults armed with a handgun and a sledgehammer, entered the store, smashed the glass display cases, and stole approximately $125,000 worth of jewelry.

They then fled south from the location on e-bikes. Numerous officers responded to the area where the suspects were last seen. With the assistance of witnesses, officers located and arrested 26-year-old Khaliq Jones of Oceanside and 26-year-old Gregory Shearrill of Hemet.

Carlsbad Promotes Safety During Pedestrian Safety Month

0

CARLSBAD, Calif. – September is Pedestrian Safety Month, and the City of Carlsbad is promoting awareness of safe practices through several programs aimed at educating walkers and drivers and increasing enforcement.

The Carlsbad Police Department will join the California Office of Traffic Safety in an annual campaign that includes enhanced enforcement in Carlsbad’s downtown and beach areas, which are the most heavily used by pedestrians. Officers will be focused on the dangerous driving behaviors that put pedestrians at risk. These violations include speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield, and running stop signs and signals.

The City of Carlsbad proclaimed a traffic safety local emergency on Aug. 23, in response to city data that showed collisions involving bikes and e-bikes increased over 200% since 2019. The city’s efforts are focused on all modes of travel, not just bikes, and include education, engineering and enforcement.

“Roadways should be safe for everyone who uses them,” stated program coordinator Officer Kyle Clement. “Slow down, remove distractions and be aware of what is going on around you. If we all look out for one another, we can all get where we need to go safely.”

Safe driving and walking tips

Drivers

Remove distractions. This includes the phone or anything that can divide your attention.
Do not speed, and slow down at intersections. Watch for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks, and always stop.
Avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to make a right-hand turn.
Never drive impaired.
Model safe driving behaviors and talk with your teens about the rules of the road.

Pedestrians

Be predictable. Use crosswalks where drivers may anticipate pedestrians.
Watch for approaching vehicles and practice due care when crossing the street. At 30 mph, a driver needs at least 90 feet to stop.
Make it easier for drivers to see you at night – wear light colors, reflective material and use a flashlight.
Be careful crossing streets or entering crosswalks at night or on busy streets with higher speed limits.
Practice safe walking routes and behaviors with your children.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
