Carlsbad’s Upcoming Bike Safety Classes

As Carlsbad students head back to school later this month, the Carlsbad Police Department is continuing its series of bike and e-bike safety classes to help kids safely share the road.

Certified bike instructors from the Carlsbad Police Department will teach one-hour classes about safety basics, including:

The rules of the road for bike and e-bike riders
Carlsbad specific e-bike laws
Signs and signals and what they mean
Where to ride in specific situations, including on neighborhood streets or busy corridors
Monday, Aug. 7
Choose a location: Sage Creek High School OR Poinsettia Elementary School
Choose a time: 8 to 9 a.m. OR 1 to 2 p.m.

No registration is required, and the classes are free to attend.

The Carlsbad Police Department is hosting classes at multiple locations to make it easier for more people to attend. Additional classes are planned at Valley Middle School and Poinsettia Elementary School on Aug. 26 and Sept. 9, and more classes will be added to the calendar this fall.

Carlsbad Unified School District student bike permits

New for the 2023-24 school year, Carlsbad Unified School District announced that all students must apply for a bike permit if they plan to ride to school. Students who participate in the classes hosted by the Carlsbad Police Department will get credit from the school district, which is responsible for issuing the permits, tracking participation and enforcing the new program.

As part of the Safer Streets Together emergency response, the Carlsbad Police Department will host more bike safety classes this fall for students who want to receive a bike permit.
