SAN MARCOS, CA (September 18, 2026) — The grand reopening of the Palomar College Umoja Village on September 17, 2026, brought together students, employees, and the broader community. The Village recently underwent a remodel with improvements designed to increase student engagement.
Umoja, a Kiswahili word meaning unity, is a community-based program dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students on college campuses nationwide. The Umoja program encourages and nurtures students, creating a welcoming environment that fosters self-efficacy and a desire to succeed. The program encourages socially responsible leadership in students’ communities and around the world.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome students to the Umoja Village,” said Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Services Nick Mata. “Our team is centrally focused on engaging students and supporting their success.”
At Palomar College, Umoja students benefit from career, academic, and personal counseling, tutoring, and mentoring, along with free fuel gift cards, public transit assistance, scholarships, sponsored events, and opportunities to attend conferences they might not otherwise be able to attend. Students are also eligible to participate in tours of historically black colleges and universities as they plan their future educational goals.
To be eligible for Umoja, Palomar College students must be interested in learning about the African-American culture and experiences and attend the Umoja program orientation. Umoja members must commit to attending at least four activities and meeting with the Umoja counselor twice per semester. Students must be interested in transferring to a four-year university and sign a student conduct agreement.
