On September 09, 2026, at approximately 10:12 a.m., North Comm Communication Center received a report of a commercial structure fire in a 3-story apartment complex located at 1225 E Grand Ave in Escondido. A commercial structure fire response was dispatched. The first arriving engine reported seeing smoke from a distance. In addition, reports indicated that there were victims trapped and potential for the fire to spread. A 2nd alarm response was requested.
Firefighters contained the fire to the 2nd floor. Multiple apartments sustained major damage. In all, 5 victims were transported to area hospitals for various injuries. 4 police officers were assessed for smoke inhalation and released. No Firefighters were injured. Firefighters rescued approximately 12 dogs and an unknown number of cats from adjoining apartments. In all, 11 Engines, 2 trucks, 7 rescue ambulances, 1 light and air unit, and 3 Battalion Chiefs responded to the fire.
SDG&E has secured electrical and gas service to the building. An unknown number of residents have been displaced as a result of the incident. The American Red Cross is assisting affected residents.
Escondido Police Department units rescued victims from the second floor, evacuated occupants from the first floor, and managed traffic. The San Marcos Fire Department, Valley Center Fire Protection District, Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, SDG&E, the San Diego Humane Society, and the American Red Cross also provided assistance.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
