On Monday, January 26, 2026, at approximately 11:30 p.m., paramedics and deputies from the Vista Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of an injured individual in the 300 block of Sycamore Avenue. A pedestrian in the area discovered the man and called for assistance. Upon arrival, paramedics located an adult male lying on the sidewalk with visible injuries to his face. The individual was conscious but disoriented. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Despite lifesaving efforts, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries several hours later. Medical staff determined the victim suffered severe head and facial trauma.
Due to the suspicious circumstances of the incident, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded to the scene and took over the investigation.
On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, 37-year-old Paul Anthony Fletcher Jr. was arrested for Penal Code section 192(c)(1) – Vehicular Manslaughter and Vehicle Code section 20001(a) – Hit and Run Resulting in Death. Mr. Fletcher was booked into the San Diego Central Jail.
At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances of the crime are still under investigation. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. The decedent’s identity is being withheld pending confirmation and notification of next of kin.
