Spoke with a friend yesterday who lost her dog to HEAT STROKE this weekend.
It wasn’t on a long hike or run. The dog was not chained up in the yard with no shade or water. The dog was loved and well cared for. He spent most of his time indoors.
The dog, a 1-1/2-year-old puppy, died following a walk around the neighborhood.
I reminded her that Heat Stroke can take up to three days to manifest. The heat stroke could have been caused by something that happened a few days before.
After the walk, the dog came back panting. That was normal. But the panting persisted. The dog refused water. It didn’t respond to human voices or even a hand in front of its face. Then came blood in the dog’s stool.
By the time they got to the veterinarian, it was too late.
Every summer Rancho Coastal Humane Society reminds pet owners about heat danger. We don’t usually worry about it in September.
