High Tech Middle North County Studying ‘Change’ in North County

The 6th-grade students at High Tech Middle North County are noticing a lot of change in North County, specifically in new developments and population growth. What are the effects of this rapid expansion on local businesses? What are the effects on the general public? Is the change good, or is it bad? Can it be both? How can modern developments honor the past while constructing for the future?

6th graders have spent time with numerous community partners digging into the questions above. These partners are: Pepper Tree, Lola’s, Escondido Lumber, Cocina Del Charro, Mining Company, San Marcos Historical Society, and Sorrento Pizza. At each meeting, students filmed and interviewed the community, the long-standing business owners.

The goal of this 2 month project is:

– film, edit, and produce a 5 minute documentary for each community partner

– write one “newspaper” article that introduces the community partner, tells its history, and explores the idea of change through the partner’s eyes

– create mini lego models of the establishments

– produce topographical maps of old North County vs New North County

Our all school exhibition, where each product will be exhibited, will be March 26th, from 5-7. Community partners, family members and the public are invited.
