Men’s Baseball Cougars, Toros Split Opening CCAA Series

CARSON, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team split its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader at Cal State Dominguez Hills with an 8-5 win in the first game and a 6-0 loss in the second game on Sunday at Toro Field.

GAME 1: CSUSM 8 – CSUDH 5 (11 Innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED •The Cougars struck early with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After Schuberg’s leadoff double down the right field, Andrew Garcia hit a one-out RBI single up the middle.
•CSUSM added three runs in the top of the second inning. After back-to-back errors by the Toros, Lovato hit an RBI bunt single to the pitcher to give CSUSM a 2-0 lead. An RBI sacrifice bunt by Schuberg plated Lopez before an RBI groundout by Bahna scored Lovato to make it a 4-0 game.
•The Toros cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the second. With runners on the corners and one out, Edward Manzo hit an RBI double through the left side for CSUDH’s first run. This was immediately followed by an RBI groundout by Bailey Bordas and an RBI single to left center by Grant Decatrel.
•CSUDH knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth as Jeremy Ciolek hit a two-out RBI single to center to score Decatrel from third.
•With a runner on second and two outs in the top of the ninth, Schuberg hit an RBI single into right field to put CSUSM up 5-4.
•The Cougars’ lead didn’t last long as the Toros knotted the game at 5-5 on a one-out sacrifice fly to left by Aaron Greenfield.
•In the bottom of the 10th, CSUSM got out of a jam as CSUDH left the game-winning run on third as a groundout to third ended the inning.
•The Cougars struck pay dirt in the top of the 11th. After a leadoff single by Griffin Teisher and a sacrifice bunt by Luna, Lopez’s RBI single to left center scored the go-ahead run. With two outs, Schuberg hit an RBI double down the right field line to score Lopez before Bahna made it an 8-5 game with an RBI single to score Schuberg.
•After two strikeouts by Cougar reliever Jacob Miller and a double by the Toro’s Pierson Loska, CSUDH hit a fly out to end the game in the bottom of the 11th.

QUICK HITS •CSUSM improved to 3-6 (2-1 CCAA) while CSUDH dropped to 2-7 (1-2 CCAA).
•Miller (2-0) earned the win for the Cougars after throwing 4.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits and three walks.
•Toro reliever Jesse Galindo (1-1) took the loss as he pitched 2.1 innings while allowing five hits and all three CSUSM runs in the 11th.
•CSUSM starter Tommy Garcia threw four strikeouts in 6.1 innings while allowing four runs on eight hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
•CSUDH starter Isaac Mullins came one out short of throwing for nine innings as he exited the game with four strikeouts while allowing five runs (two earned) on nine hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
•The Cougars tallied a season-high 14 hits to the Toro’s 11.
•Teisher extended his reached-base streak to nine games while Bahna and Johnathan Combs each moved their hitting streaks to seven games.

GAME 2: CSUDH 6 – CSUSM 0 (7 Innings)

HOW IT HAPPENED •The Toros opened up the scoring at 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out RBI single to right center by Aaron Greenfield.
•A one-out solo homer by Matt Beserra in the bottom of the second gave CSUDH a 2-0 lead.
•In the bottom of the fifth, Pierson Loska hit a one-out triple to right before Nick Henry brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0. After a double and a walk, Angel Estrada made it a 5-0 game with a two-RBI double to left center. Jose Jimenez extended the Toros’ lead to 6-0 with an RBI single through the right side.

QUICK HITS •CSUSM fell to 3-7 (2-2 CCAA) while CSUDH improved to 3-7 (2-2 CCAA).
•Toro starter Nathan Ortiz (1-0) allowed just four hits, two hit-by-pitches and a walk while striking out four in 4.2 innings.
•Cougar starter Garrett Apker (0-3) took the loss as he allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks in 4.2 innings while tying his season high with seven strikeouts.
•This was CSUSM first shutout loss since May 4, 2018, against UC San Diego at home. The Cougars’ last shutout loss on the road occurred that same season at Cal State East Bay on March 24.
•Griffin Teisher extended his reached-base streak to 10 games as he was hit by a pitch twice.
•Bahna now has a team-leading eight-game hitting streak.
•This is the first time CSUSM and CSUDH have split a four-game CCAA series. The two squads split a two-game series back in 2007.
